What is the mortality rate of pituitary tumors

For every sick patient, only through good treatment can there be hope of recovery, and patients with pituitary tumors are no exception. In the process of caring for physical treatment, the question that patients often ask most is the mortality rate of various diseases. So below I will introduce to you how high the mortality rate of pituitary tumors is. I hope you can understand more.

Pituitary tumors are generally not life-threatening and are benign tumors. Pituitary tumors are divided into non-functional and hormone-secreting types. Non-functional types generally cause intracranial space-occupying effects. The main symptoms are:

1. Compression of the optic nerve causes decreased vision

2. Compression of intracranial structures causes dizziness, headache, and increased intracranial pressure. The hormone secretion type depends on the type of hormone secretion, such as (1) prolactin type, abnormal lactation. (2) growth hormone type, acromegaly, gigantism, etc. (3) sex hormone type, this is easy to understand, so I won’t say more.

So, what are the dangers of pituitary tumors?

1. Excessive secretion of pituitary hormones causes a series of metabolic disorders and organ damage.

2. Regarding the hazards of this type of pituitary tumor, the tumor compresses other pituitary hormones, causing a decrease in the function of the corresponding target glands.

3. Compression of structures in the sella turcica area, such as the optic chiasm, optic nerve, cavernous sinus, basilar cerebral artery, hypothalamus, and ventricle III, and even involving the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and brain stem, leading to serious impairment of corresponding functions.

4. Damage to the body caused by abnormal target organ function due to excessive hormones.

Transsphenoidal surgery is a treatment method that does not involve opening the skull. It uses the nasal passage and the sphenoid sinus to directly reach the pituitary tumor. Compared with craniotomy, it has the advantages of better tumor exposure, less trauma and risk, no damage to the craniofacial appearance, good efficacy, and high cure rate. Transsphenoidal minimally invasive surgery is currently the most classic surgical method for treating pituitary tumors, but this surgery has very high requirements on the technical level of experts.

Each disease varies from person to person. As long as you maintain a good attitude, pay attention to a healthy diet, and cooperate with your doctor's regular check-ups, the mortality rate of pituitary tumors is still very low, so you can rest assured.
