My eyes itch and a swell up when I rub them

Eyes are one of our five senses and play an important role in our body. We need to use our eyes to see things and feel the world, and eye diseases cannot be ignored. I believe that many people often rub their eyes, especially when their eyes are itchy, they can't help rubbing them, but sometimes you will find that your eyes are swollen after rubbing. Although it is not a serious problem, it may also indicate other minor problems. So why do eyes swell up when you rub them when they are itchy?

1. Causes of swelling of eyes when rubbing them

The climate is dry and dusty in winter, which can cause dryness and fatigue in the eyes, reduce resistance, and make one more susceptible to acute allergic conjunctivitis. It is usually accompanied by extreme itching of the eyes, a large amount of sticky secretions, and hyperplasia of follicles and papillae on the eyelids. In severe cases, corneal ulcers may occur and even affect vision. There are many allergens that cause allergies, mainly pollen, dust mites, animal hair, etc., followed by perfumes, cosmetics, contact lenses and their care solutions that come into contact with the eyes on a daily basis, and even medicines or foods such as seafood and mangoes may cause allergies.

2. Mitigation Methods

1. For symptoms such as itching, redness, and edema caused by acute allergic reactions, you can use sodium cromoglycate, naphthalene, pranoprofen, azelastine eye drops, etc. If the symptoms are not relieved after treatment, when the eyes are red and itchy, you can use hormone eye drops for a short period of time. After the condition stabilizes, you can switch to a milder antihistamine solution to consolidate the treatment.

2. You can also use it in combination with oral anti-allergic drugs such as chlorpheniramine and Claritin. If there is concurrent bacterial infection of the eye, tobramycin, ofloxacin and other eye drops can be added topically. 3. If your eyes are extremely itchy at home, cold compress (ice compress) is also a good way to temporarily relieve the itching. Apply a cold towel or gauze to both eyes for 15-20 minutes each time, about three to four times a day.
