5 tips to relieve sore throat

The monsoon rains, bringing relief from the scorching summer heat, leave us more than just a great relief. The cooling effect of these showers takes its toll on your body and may start to make your throat feel uncomfortable. Of course, there are timely and natural treatments for sore throats without seeing a doctor.

1. Gargle with salt water

As simple as it sounds, sprinkle salt in warm water and gargle regularly; this will not only cure a sore throat but also prevent it from recurring. Gargling is a boon to those who are susceptible to chronic tonsillitis. If you make it a habit, it can kill bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath or other problems.

2. Drink more lemon, honey and tea

Just boil a cup of water and add a tablespoon of honey and half a lemon to it. The tea's mouthfeel is full, warming and comforting, and works like magic to soothe a sore throat. The honey coats your throat and suppresses coughing, while the lemon helps thin mucus and relaxes throat muscles.

3. Warm Turmeric Milk

An age-old remedy for fighting various infections, turmeric milk has long been used to treat those incessant nighttime coughs, especially when it interferes with a good night’s sleep. Turmeric has antibacterial and healing properties that make it very beneficial in treating a sore throat.

4. Stay hydrated

Your body needs water to fight infection and other cold symptoms. Therefore, the more water you drink during a sore throat, the higher your chances of recovery. In addition, water can keep the mucous membrane moist and relieve sore throat and cough symptoms.

5. Don’t smoke

Never smoke when you have a sore throat, as it stimulates the production of more mucus.

Acidic foods like tomatoes, oranges, and grapefruit can also irritate and worsen sore throat symptoms, as can spicy foods containing chili powder, pepper, and cloves. The first thing you should do to protect your throat is to stay away from these foods.
