The difference between regular contraceptive pills and emergency contraceptive pills

We all know that maintaining a normal sex life is the most effective communication between couples, but for families that have already had children, contraception is very important. With the continuous development of society, there are more and more ways of contraception. Our most commonly used contraceptive method is taking birth control pills, but there are many types of birth control pills. The most common ones are conventional birth control pills and emergency birth control pills. They can all have a contraceptive effect, but they still have certain differences. Let us understand the difference between conventional birth control pills and emergency birth control pills.

The difference between regular contraceptive pills and emergency contraceptive pills:

1. Applicable Situations

Generally, conventional contraceptive pills are a contraceptive method that can be used for a long time. Under normal use, taking one pill a day for 21 consecutive days during each menstrual cycle can maintain a long-term and reliable contraceptive effect. It is more suitable for daily contraceptive use by healthy women of childbearing age.

As the name suggests, emergency contraceptive pills are a type of remedial contraceptive pills. They are suitable for women who suffer accidental injuries, have unprotected sex or other contraceptive methods fail. Generally, taking them within 72 hours afterwards can help avoid unwanted pregnancy. However, this type of contraceptive pill is not suitable for daily contraception, and it is best not to take it more than three times a year.

2. Mechanism of action

Conventional contraceptives work together with progestin and estrogen. As a safe and effective contraceptive method, they have been constantly improved. The estrogen content is gradually decreasing, and progestin is constantly being updated.

The main ingredient of emergency contraceptive pills is a large amount of progestin. The amount of hormone taken in once is equivalent to the content in 8-day conventional short-acting oral contraceptives. Therefore, large doses of exogenous hormones can easily cause endocrine disorders and changes in the menstrual cycle in women.

By understanding the difference between conventional contraceptives and emergency contraceptives, we must choose contraceptives based on our own lifestyle habits, as well as our own physical health. What is suitable for others may not be suitable for you. After all, everyone's physique is different.
