What is whey protein concentrate?

Whey protein is actually a protein extracted from milk and is known as the king of protein. The nutritional value of this protein is very high, and it is easily digested and absorbed by the human body. Therefore, for convenience, researchers have made it into whey protein concentrate after some operations. Below we will take a closer look at some knowledge about whey protein concentrate.

Whey protein refers to the protein dissolved and dispersed in whey, accounting for about 18% to 20% of milk protein. It can be divided into heat-stable and heat-unstable whey protein. When whey liquid is boiled at pH = 4.6-4.7 for 20 minutes, a type of protein that precipitates is heat-unstable whey protein, mainly including lactalbumin and lactoglobulin; while the protein that does not precipitate is heat-stable protein, which accounts for about 19% of whey protein. When saturated ammonium sulfate or saturated magnesium sulfate is added to neutral whey for precipitation, the protein that remains dissolved but not precipitated is lactalbumin, and the protein that can precipitate but not dissolved is lactoglobulin.

Whey protein is a precious protein separated and extracted from milk using advanced technology. It is regarded as the "king of protein" for its many advantages, including high purity, high absorption rate, and the most reasonable amino acid composition. Whey protein is not only easy to digest, but also has high biological value, high digestibility, high protein efficacy ratio and high utilization rate. It is a fine protein and is recognized as one of the high-quality protein supplements for the human body. Milk is composed of 87% water and 13% milk solids. Among milk solids, 27% is milk protein, of which only 20% is whey protein, and the remaining 80% is casein. Therefore, the content of whey protein in milk is only 0.7%.

With the continuous development of product technology and the increasingly fierce competition in protein products, whey protein products have gradually become diversified. Concentrated whey protein, isolated whey protein, and whey protein products with added protein peptides have appeared on the market. Whey protein concentrate is actually whey powder obtained by directly drying whey. The whey protein content in the concentrate is extremely low, generally a few percent and no more than 30 percent. The product obtained after whey is clarified, ultrafiltered, dried, etc. is concentrated whey protein. Different filtration levels can produce products with protein concentrations ranging from 34-80%.

Through the above introduction to whey protein and whey protein concentrate, we have a basic understanding. Because there are many mixed whey protein products on the market, for safety reasons, doctors recommend that when purchasing this product, you must go to a regular pharmacy to buy it. Secondly, you must pay attention to the purchase date to avoid expiration and affecting your condition after consumption.
