Will I gain weight if I drink yogurt every day?

Many people like to drink yogurt and buy a few bags every time they go to the supermarket. Now there are many kinds of yogurt and various brands on the market. There is a reason why yogurt is popular. Not only does it taste good, it is also very nutritious. Because it is made from fermented milk, it contains lactic acid bacteria, which is beneficial for intestinal digestion. Many people with constipation regard yogurt as a tool to help defecation. So, will drinking yogurt every day make you fat?

1. Will drinking yogurt often make you fat?

A glass of milk in the morning and a cup of yogurt in the evening is ideal. However, some people particularly like yogurt and often drink a lot of yogurt after meals, which may cause weight gain. This is because yogurt itself contains a certain amount of calories. Drinking yogurt after a meal is equivalent to taking in extra calories, which leads to weight gain. Therefore, except for infants and young children, all groups of people are recommended to drink 1-2 cups of yogurt (about 250 ml) every day. It is best to drink it 30-60 minutes after a meal. It can regulate intestinal flora and is beneficial to health.

Yogurt can also prevent diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that can cause elevated blood sugar levels. About 90% of diabetic patients suffer from type 2 diabetes, which is mainly caused by insufficient insulin secretion and insulin resistance. In the United States, there are approximately 26 million people with type 2 diabetes, and there are nearly 366 million people with diabetes worldwide. In addition, data shows that by 2030, this number will increase to 552 million. It is well known that patients with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of various cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke.

A study found that yogurt intake was associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes, and increased yogurt intake could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, there was no significant correlation between other dairy products and total dairy product intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest that yogurt should be included in a healthy eating pattern.

Prior to this study, earlier studies had suggested that calcium, magnesium and certain types of fatty acids in dairy products could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The current view is that the probiotics in yogurt can also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by improving lipid metabolism and antioxidant effects.

Note: Diabetics, patients with atherosclerosis, cholecystitis and pancreatitis should not drink sugary full-fat yogurt, otherwise it will easily aggravate their condition.

Benefits of drinking yogurt regularly:

1. Prevent gynecological infections. Vaginal yeast infections are a common problem for women with diabetes. A smaller study found that women with diabetes and chronic yeast infections who drank 200 ml of sweetened yogurt daily lowered their vaginal pH from 6.0 to 4.0 (normal range: 4.0-4.5) and had fewer yeast infections.

2. Lower blood pressure. Studies have found that among those who drink 2-3 servings or more of yogurt a day, the risk of developing high blood pressure is 50% lower than those who do not drink it.

When buying yogurt, it is best to choose those with lower calories. Don’t drink too much a day, two bags at most. Otherwise, you will gain weight and the nutrients will not be absorbed and will be wasted. Yogurt can also help you fill your stomach when you are hungry, so you will eat less at the next meal, which can also help you lose weight.
