What is the reason for back heaviness and pain

In life, many people suffer from back pain. There are many reasons for back pain, such as arthritis, calcium deficiency, cold, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. If you want to confirm the cause of the back pain, it is best to go to the hospital for examination and do an electrocardiogram or trace element test if necessary. Based on the results of the examination, targeted treatment can be given after the diagnosis.

Generally, the symptoms of early ankylosing spondylitis include:

(1) In the early stages of ankylosing spondylitis, symptoms of low back pain and stiffness usually last for more than three months and cannot be relieved by rest.

(2) Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis also include unilateral or bilateral sciatica, with no obvious history of trauma or sprain.

(3) Recurrent swelling and pain in the knee or ankle joints, joint effusion, and no obvious history of trauma or infection are also symptoms of early ankylosing spondylitis.

(4) Recurrent swelling and pain in the calcaneal tuberosity or heel pain is also one of the symptoms of early ankylosing spondylitis.

(5) Recurrent iritis or no respiratory symptoms such as cough, chest pain and tightness without history of trauma, and limited chest movement.

(7) Symptoms of early ankylosing spondylitis include spinal pain, stiffness, and even limited mobility, with no obvious history of trauma or sprain.

(8) Bilateral buttocks and hip joint pain, with no obvious history of trauma or strain.

(9) Sudden pain, swelling, and dysfunction in the spine and large joints of the limbs.

The symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis in the middle and late stages mainly include the following:

1. The first symptom of ankylosing spondylitis in the middle and late stages is sacroiliitis. Its clinical symptoms include pain in the waist or lumbosacral area, accompanied by stiffness, which is intermittent and recurrent, with varying durations of symptoms or intervals. Examination may reveal tenderness and percussion pain in the sacroiliac joints, and the pelvic separation test and squeeze test are positive.

2. Lumbar spine disease is also a symptom of mid-to-late stage ankylosing spondylitis, characterized by: low back pain, limited flexion, back extension, lateral bending and rotation of the waist, significantly increased distance of both hands touching the ground, and in late stage disease, the normal physiological curvature of the lumbar spine disappears and becomes flat. Due to paraspinal muscle spasm, there are strip-like bulges on both sides of the median depression of the lumbar spine, which are stiff to the touch, and lumbar muscle atrophy may also occur.

3. Thoracic spine lesions: back pain, pain in the anterior chest and ribs, limited chest expansion, patients may experience abdominal breathing and a respiratory difference of less than 2.5 cm, and lung function may manifest as restrictive ventilation disorder. In the late stage of ankylosing spondylitis, patients may experience thoracic flexion and kyphosis. This is also a symptom of ankylosing spondylitis in the middle and late stages.

4. Cervical spondylosis is also a symptom of mid-to-late stage ankylosing spondylitis, and its characteristics are: cervical pain that can radiate to the back of the head and upper limbs, neck stiffness and limited movement, limited functions of lowering the head, raising the head, and turning the head. When looking back, the body must be turned together. This is caused by the stiffness of the neck. Examination may reveal that the mandibular distance of the patient is enlarged, and in severe cases, the patient may suffer from severe flexion deformity of the head and back. The patient cannot look straight ahead and can only see the soles of his feet. In the late stage of ankylosing spondylitis, all the joints of the spine have become ankylosed and fixed, and the spine appears bamboo-like on X-rays. At this time, the pain is no longer obvious, but difficulty in movement and joint stiffness are the main sufferings of the patient.
