What are the symptoms of epilepsy in children

1. Characteristics of the attack

The onset of absence epilepsy in children is a generalized absence seizure. The seizure is short, usually lasting 5 to 10 seconds and no more than 30 seconds. The seizure can be simple absence or complex absence. However, children generally do not have myoclonic absence, and rhythmic blinking and backwash movements are rare. The clinical manifestations are sudden onset and sudden recovery of consciousness disorders, with frequency of attacks multiple times a day, up to dozens to hundreds of times a day, which is extremely detrimental to the intellectual development of children.

2. Age characteristics of onset

Early onset age is also one of the symptom characteristics of absence epilepsy in children. Most cases of absence epilepsy in children begin between 4 and 8 years old, with the peak age being around 5 years old. In a few children, the onset age can be as early as 2 years old.

3. There may be absence accompanied by autonomic nervous system symptoms

Autonomic nervous system symptoms are often observed during absence epileptic seizures in children, such as dilated pupils, pale or flushed face, tachycardia, respiratory changes, etc. A small number of children may have urinary incontinence. In addition, some children's absence seizures are accompanied by mild clonic components, which are mainly manifested as mild myoclonic twitches in the hands or upper limbs during absence seizures. If myoclonus is the prominent symptom, myoclonic absence should be considered.

4. Brief loss of consciousness

Children may also have a brief loss of consciousness during absence epileptic seizures, which may start and end suddenly. The ongoing activities are interrupted during the seizure, the eyes are staring, and the eyeballs roll up briefly. For example, the patient may suddenly stop walking, suddenly stop or slow down talking, or leave food at the mouth when eating. The whole process lasts for a few seconds and then suddenly disappears. The attack is often accompanied by mild clonus, atonia, rigidity, or automatism, or it may simply manifest as impaired consciousness.
