Is sinusitis serious?

After suffering from sinusitis, we often feel nasal congestion, especially when we lie down to sleep at night, this feeling will be more intense. We will feel uncomfortable breathing when we breathe through our nose, and we will feel dry mouth and tongue when we breathe through our mouth. Therefore, sinusitis is really a very harmful disease, and this disease may also cause various complications. So is sinusitis serious?

Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal mucosa and submucosal tissue. It manifests as congestion or edema, and patients often experience symptoms such as nasal congestion, clear runny nose, nasal itching, throat discomfort, and cough.

The thin liquid-like substance secreted by the nasal cavity is called snot or nasal secretion. Its function is to help remove dust and bacteria to keep the lungs healthy. Normally, nasal mucus mixed with bacteria and dust is inhaled into the throat and eventually enters the stomach. Because the amount of secretion is very small, it generally does not attract people's attention.

When inflammation occurs in the nose, a large amount of nasal mucus can be secreted in the nasal cavity, and it may turn yellow due to the infection. It can cause coughing when flowing through the throat. When the amount of nasal mucus is very large, it can also flow out through the anterior nostril.

The clinical symptoms of rhinitis vary and are extremely harmful. When it affects the physiological function of the nasal cavity, breathing disorders will occur, causing a decrease in blood oxygen concentration, affecting the function and metabolism of other tissues and organs, and causing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, memory loss, chest pain, chest tightness, mental depression, etc., and even serious complications such as emphysema, cor pulmonale, and asthma. When rhinitis is not treated in time and affects the olfactory mucosa, olfactory disorders will occur, resulting in the inability to smell fragrance or odors. When long-term recurrent sinusitis is not treated in time, the inflammation will spread to adjacent organs and tissues, and may lead to complications such as frontal bone osteomyelitis, orbital bone wall osteomyelitis and periostitis, orbital wall subperiosteal abscess, orbital cellulitis, retrobulbar optic neuritis, epidural abscess, subdural abscess, purulent meningitis, brain abscess, cavernous sinus thrombosis and other critical emergencies.

The latest medical research at home and abroad has confirmed that 80% of nasopharyngeal cancer in the world occurs in China, and about 90% of nasopharyngeal cancer is caused by the deterioration of rhinitis that has not been cured for a long time. In terms of work and study, adults will suffer from headaches, unclear thinking, drowsiness and low work efficiency due to rhinitis; while teenagers will have a lack of concentration and a significant decline in memory and academic performance due to symptoms such as nasal congestion and headaches caused by rhinitis. Other complications caused by rhinitis include: prolonged nasal congestion and difficulty breathing, which can cause sleep apnea syndrome; the patient's inferior turbinate is enlarged, and there is insufficient oxygen during sleep. In severe cases, it can cause cerebral infarction, high blood pressure, sudden heart attack, etc. Some patients may even die suddenly at night. This kind of case occurs in all major hospitals. Therefore, you must not take rhinitis lightly. When you or your family or friends suffer from rhinitis, you should seek timely treatment to avoid serious complications.
