Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

Prostate cancer is a common malignant tumor that threatens elderly men. 80% of patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage and lose the opportunity for early treatment. Early diagnosis of prostate cancer may lead to cure.

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive surgical method that makes five small holes in the patient's lower abdomen to complete the combined removal of the entire prostate and its capsule, bilateral seminal vesicles and bilateral ampulla of the vas deferens, bladder neck and regional lymph nodes. After removing the prostate and its surrounding tissue structures, the bladder is reconnected to the remaining urethra with special sutures under laparoscopy.

Our department has been performing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy since 2006. It has become a routine surgery and has achieved satisfactory results. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is less invasive, with less blood loss during surgery and faster recovery after surgery. Patients can get out of bed and move around 3 days after surgery and can be discharged from the hospital 5-7 days later. The main complications of surgery are urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Urinary incontinence can disappear 2-3 months after surgery. For very early prostate cancer, we can use a nerve-sparing surgery.

For locally advanced prostate cancer, such as those that have invaded the seminal vesicles and capsule, we can also use neoadjuvant endocrine therapy for 3-6 months. If the tumor is obviously localized or reduced, surgery can also be performed. However, adjuvant drug therapy or radiotherapy should still be given after surgery to achieve satisfactory results.
