Biyanling Tablets have achieved significant toxicity-reducing and efficacy-enhancing effects in radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

The ingredients of Biyanling Tablets include Sophora flavescens, Poria cocos, Radix Trichosanthis, Herba Epimedii, Radix Ophiopogonis, Scutellaria barbata, Scrophularia ningpoensis, Cypress on the Stone, Codonopsis pilosula, and Hedyotis diffusa. Biyanling Tablets can be used for chest and diaphragm wind-heat, phlegm-fire stagnation, heat toxicity, and qi-consuming and body fluid-damaging symptoms. Common symptoms include dry mouth, sore throat, dry and burning throat, hoarseness, headache, nasal congestion, purulent nasal discharge or blood in the nasal discharge. It is also used to treat acute and chronic pharyngitis, stomatitis, nasopharyngitis, and radiotherapy and chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The following experiments prove that the formula of Biyanling Tablets conforms to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine treatment, and its application in radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma can achieve a significant toxicity-reducing and synergistic effect.

Objective: To verify the effect of Biyanling tablets in reducing toxicity and increasing efficacy in radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by objective indicators.

Methods: 194 patients with NPC were divided into two groups, 97 in each group. All patients received combined radiotherapy of the first segment of the face and neck with 40 Gy/4 weeks. During radiotherapy, the treatment group took Biyanling tablets, 5 tablets each time, 3 times a day.

Results: 1. The acute radiation reactions of the oropharyngeal mucosa, skin and gastrointestinal tract in the treatment group were significantly milder than those in the control group, respectively P=0.001, P=0.004, P=0.000; 2. The time and dose for the tumor to shrink by 1/2 in the treatment group were both shorter than those in the control group, P=0.001, P=0.004, P=0.000; 3. The time and dose for the tumor to shrink by 1/2 in the treatment group were both shorter than those in the control group, P=0.001, P=0.004, P=0.000.

The formula of Biyanling tablets conforms to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine treatment. When used in combination with radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, it can achieve a more significant effect of reducing toxicity and increasing efficacy.
