Is prostate cancer dangerous?

Prostate cancer is very harmful, especially in the late stage, which may pose a serious threat to life. However, if it is detected early and treated actively, the prognosis is better. Prostate cancer is a common malignant tumor in middle-aged and elderly men. The early symptoms are often not obvious. Many people are already in the middle and late stages when they are diagnosed. Therefore, it is often called the "invisible killer."

The main harm of prostate cancer is that it progresses slowly. However, if early screening is neglected, cancer cells may invade surrounding organs or metastasize to bones, leading to urinary system symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, difficulty urinating, and even hematuria. Complications such as bone pain and pathological fractures may also occur. Advanced patients often have systemic symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, and other organ failure in severe cases. Some patients also suffer from pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and other problems due to tumor compression, further affecting their quality of life.

In order to reduce the harm of prostate cancer, regular screening is recommended, especially for middle-aged and elderly men over 50 years old or those with a family history of prostate cancer. Suspicious lesions can be detected early through PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing and rectal examination. Treatment methods mainly include surgical resection, such as radical prostatectomy; radiotherapy, such as external teleradiotherapy or brachyradiotherapy; drug therapy, such as androgen deprivation therapy and new anti-androgen drugs (such as abiraterone, deuterated dlutamide, etc.). In terms of diet, you can eat more foods rich in lycopene and antioxidants, such as tomatoes, carrots, green tea, etc., and stay away from high-fat diets; you also need to quit smoking and limit alcohol, maintain a healthy weight and regularly perform aerobic exercise such as brisk walking or swimming. These measures can help reduce the risk of disease and improve the quality of life.
