The ethanol extract of Spirulina platensis containing lipids and triterpenoid compounds has the strongest antibacterial activity. The extract containing sterols also has an antibacterial effect, but the effect is weaker. Spirulina platensis has no inhibitory effect on Gram-negative bacteria.

3. Anti-cancer effect: Spirulina has an inhibitory effect on the formation of degenerative crypts in the large intestine of NIH mice and standard deviation rats induced by short-term single injection and long-term multiple injections of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine.

4. Photosensitization: When cultured mouse myeloma cells were treated with 0.25 mg/ml phycocyanin and then irradiated with 514 nm laser at 300 J/cm2, the survival rate of cancer cells was only 15%. However, when laser irradiation or phycocyanin treatment was used alone, the cell survival rates were 69% and 71%.

5. Effect on the immune system: Spirulina polysaccharides can increase the serum hemolysin of mice by 39.5%-98.0%, the phagocytic rate of peritoneal macrophages by 32.5%-51.5%, the phagocytic index by 0.9-1.8 times, the number of T lymphocytes by 46.8%-87.7%, the dense arrangement of lymphocytes in the white pulp of the spleen, the significant increase in macrophages in the red pulp, and the increase of acid α-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) positive lymphocytes by 7.3%-12.8%.

6. Lowering cholesterol: 30 men with high cholesterol and mild hyperlipidemia were divided into two groups. Group A took 4.2g of spirulina daily for 8 weeks. The total serum cholesterol dropped from 6.3mmol/L (244mg/dl) to 6.1mmol/L (233mg/dl) within 4 weeks, a decrease of 4.5%. Group B stopped taking the medicine after 4 weeks, and the total serum cholesterol decreased and then returned to the initial level. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly reduced by 6.1% within 4 weeks. For people with high cholesterol levels, the reduction in serum cholesterol was even greater.

7. Protective effect on the stomach: Oral administration of 250-500 mg/kg of Spirulina platensis has a significant protective effect on indomethacin (indomethacin) type and anhydrous ethanol type experimental rat gastric ulcer models; it can reduce the incidence of pylorus ligation type rat ulcer model and reduce the number of ulcers, and also has a certain inhibitory effect on gastric juice secretion; it can accelerate the healing of chronic acetic acid type rat gastric ulcer.
