Can fresh daylily be eaten

We all know that vegetables and fruits are better to be eaten when they are fresh. If things are left for a long time, they will not only lose nutrients but also become moldy, which will cause harm to the body if we eat them. So can we eat fresh day lily? Because the day lily we often eat is dried day lily. Let's take a look at the introduction below.

Can fresh daylily be eaten?

If we want to know whether day lily can be eaten fresh, we must first know and understand what day lily is, what nutritional value it has, and what benefits eating day lily regularly will bring us.

Daylily (scientific name: Hemerocallis citrina

Baroni, also known as daylily and lemon daylily, is a perennial herb belonging to the Liliales, Liliaceae family. The root is nearly fleshy, and the middle and lower parts often have spindle-shaped swellings. The pedicels are of varying lengths, with short pedicels and numerous flowers. The perianth is light yellow, orange-red, or dark purple. The capsule is obtusely triangular-oval, and the flowering and fruiting period is from May to September. [1]

It is sweet and cool in nature, and has the effects of stopping bleeding, anti-inflammatory, clearing heat, and promoting dampness. It is rich in pollen, sugar, protein, vitamin C, calcium, fat, carotene, amino acids and other nutrients necessary for the human body. Mainly distributed in China.

Fresh daylily contains a toxin called colchicine, also known as colchicine. The lethal dose of colchicine to the human body is 8 to 65 mg. People can be poisoned if they eat 100 grams of fresh daylily.

This substance itself is not toxic, but when it enters the human body and is oxidized, it will quickly generate colchicine, which has a strong stimulating effect on the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system of the human body, and may cause poisoning symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. The traditional way of eating it is to smoke it dry before eating. This toxin can be decomposed during the long-term, high-temperature smoking process, so there is no poison in the smoked day lily.

If you do not use the correct method when eating fresh daylily, what should you do if you get poisoned by it? Here I would like to remind everyone that when fresh daylily poisoning occurs, if it is relatively mild, you can immediately undergo detoxification treatment, drink plenty of warm boiled water, and use your fingers to press the root of the tongue, repeatedly induce vomiting, or drink some glucose solution or mung bean soup, which can dilute the toxins and accelerate excretion. If someone eats too much fresh daylily and has severe poisoning symptoms, he or she needs to be sent to the hospital for treatment immediately. At the same time, it is best to eat dried daylily products because the toxic components have been eliminated during the production process.

You can eat it safely after blanching it in boiling water, because the colchicine component can be dissolved at a high temperature of 60 degrees, but you cannot eat too much in one meal.

In the above article, we introduced that we should eat most vegetables and fruits fresh. If many vegetables and fruits are stored for a long time, not only will the nutrients be lost but also poisoning may occur after eating. We often eat dried day lily but rarely day lily. This is because fresh day lily contains colchicine, which can cause poisoning, so fresh day lily should not be eaten.
