Can you still eat yam when it turns red

Can you still eat yam when it turns red

Yam is a food ingredient that can be used as both medicine and food, because it not only has high practical value, but also has very good pharmacological effects. However, when preserving yam, you must pay attention to the correct storage method, because if it is not stored properly, the yam will easily turn black and yellow. Because the special ingredients contained in yam will oxidize after contact with air, but can yam still be eaten after it turns red?

Can I still eat yam if it turns red?

Cannot be eaten. Fresh yam has a strong antioxidant effect and easily combines with oxygen to turn black, similar to apples. Not using a metal knife for slicing may slow down the oxidation of the slices, but if you use other knives with blunt blades, the cut surface of the skin will be rubbed multiple times by the blade, which will accelerate the oxidation.

The redness of yam is caused by oxidation and deterioration, so it is best not to eat it. Yam has many functions such as strengthening the spleen, nourishing the lungs, consolidating the kidneys, and improving the essence. It also has a certain therapeutic effect on symptoms such as lung deficiency cough, spleen deficiency diarrhea, kidney deficiency spermatorrhea, leucorrhea and frequent urination. Lotus root is rich in vitamin C and minerals, so it has the effects of nourishing blood, helping sleep, cooling and relieving inflammation, stopping bleeding and dispersing blood stasis. Moreover, due to the comprehensive effects of lotus root in the human body, it can also help eliminate nervous fatigue, autonomic nervous system disorders, menopausal disorders and insomnia.

Dietary taboos of yam

1. Do not eat yam with carp and gansui as they are incompatible.

2. Do not eat yam and kansui together; do not take them with alkaline drugs.

3. Yam and pork liver. Yam is rich in vitamin C, and pork liver contains trace metal elements such as copper, iron, and zinc. When vitamin C meets metal ions, it accelerates oxidation and destruction, reducing its nutritional value. Therefore, it is not advisable to eat yam after eating pork liver.

4. Yam with cucumber, pumpkin, carrot and winter squash. Cucumber, pumpkin, carrot, and winter squash all contain vitamin C-degrading enzymes. If they are eaten with yam, the vitamin C will be decomposed and destroyed.

5. Yam and seafood. In addition to minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, and iodine, general seafood (including fish, shrimp, and algae) are rich in protein. Fruits such as hawthorn and pomegranate contain tannic acid. If they are mixed and eaten, they will be combined into tannic acid protein, which has an astringent effect, causing constipation, increasing the absorption of toxins in the intestines, and causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

6. Yam is rich in nutrients, containing starch, protein, mucus and other nutrients. In particular, the amylase it contains can hydrolyze starch into glucose, directly providing heat energy to the brain and playing an important role in brain health. In terms of the physiological activities of the brain, it is necessary to rely on a large class of chemical substances to be transmitted between neurons. These substances are called neurotransmitters. To improve brain memory, it is necessary to supplement foods containing cholecalcitonin and lecithin. Yam is rich in cholecalciferol and lecithin, which help improve people's memory.
