How to read urine analysis test strips

How to read urine analysis test strips

Urine analysis test strips are widely used in real life. For example, the most common application is as an early pregnancy test strip. This is a test value that many women like to use to see whether they are pregnant. In addition to this function, it also has a good effect in testing urine bilirubin, testing urine ascorbic acid, etc. Let's take a look at how to use urine analysis test strips.

How to read urine analysis test strips

The detection principle of urine analysis test strips can be tested in many ways. Among them, ketone bodies can be detected: acetylethylamine reacts with sodium ferricyanide nitrite under strong alkaline conditions to generate a purple-red compound. The color ranges from beige for a negative result to purple for a positive result.

In addition, the reaction of bilirubin can also be observed: bilirubin couples with dichloroaniline diazonium salt under strong acidic conditions to generate azo dyes. The color changes from light yellow for a negative result to brown for a positive result.

In addition, urine analysis test strips can also be tested for glucose: this test chamber uses a two-step continuous enzymatic reaction. First, glucose generates gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide under the action of glucose oxidase. Then, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes potassium iodide under the action of catalase, causing a color change. The color range is from turquoise for a negative result to dark brown for a positive result.

Urinalysis precautions

The first thing to note in a routine urine test is that fresh morning urine should be used as a urine specimen. Because people drink less water at night, the various components excreted into the urine by the kidneys are stored in the bladder and concentrated, making them easy to detect, thereby increasing the positive detection rate. Other randomly collected urine samples are also acceptable, but midstream urine should be collected as much as possible.

1. During the routine urine test, collect no less than 10 ml of urine.

2. Women are generally required to avoid collecting urine samples during their menstrual period to prevent vaginal secretions from mixing into the urine and affecting the test results.

3. It is best to collect midstream urine. Many kidney patients have asked why they should consciously collect midstream urine during routine urine tests? According to the order of urination, urine can be divided into the front section, middle section and back section. Because the first and second stream urine are easily contaminated, midstream urine is generally collected when doing urine routine and urine bacteriological examinations.

4. Urine should be collected in clean and dry containers, such as the disposable urine cup and urine test tube provided by the hospital.

5. The retained urine should be sent to the laboratory for examination as soon as possible, because if it is left for too long, problems such as glucose being decomposed by bacteria, tubular destruction, and cell lysis may occur, which will affect the accuracy of the test results. Therefore, when doing a routine urine test, paying attention to the correct standards for collecting urine samples is the key to ensuring the accuracy of the urine test results.
