What causes itchy scalp? Experts answer your questions

Sometimes people will find that their scalp is particularly itchy. This feeling is very uncomfortable, and people will unconsciously scratch it with their hands. However, the more they scratch, the worse the situation becomes. Therefore, when the scalp is itchy, you must first learn to find the cause, and then use the correct method according to the cause.

1. Scalp itching is caused by the destruction of the balance of scalp flora and the proliferation of harmful bacteria. If not prevented and treated, it will cause an imbalance of oil and metabolism, disrupt the entire scalp state, and seriously damage the health of the scalp. The scalp is the most important command control center of the human body - the natural barrier of the head. Its fragility and sensitivity are second only to the eyelids, and it can be said that a single move can affect the entire body. Scalp problems should not be underestimated and also require health management. Only by comprehensive, systematic and scientific conditioning and maintenance of the scalp can we eliminate scalp problems such as itchy scalp from the root and maintain the health of the scalp.

2. Dandruff is often related to fungi

Dandruff is composed of scalp keratin cells. Under normal circumstances, the basal cells under the scalp epidermis will continue to multiply and push to the surface. When these cells mature and become keratin cells, they will fall off. Generally speaking, the process of shedding keratinized epidermal cells on the scalp takes about 28 days. On the scalp, there is also a common fungus group called Malassezia, which feeds on the sebum secreted by the scalp. If Malassezia reproduces abnormally and its number exceeds normal levels, it will accelerate epidermal metabolism and compress the process of keratinization and shedding of epidermal cells to 7 to 21 days. Epidermal cells fall off in large groups, which is visible to the naked eye as dandruff. In addition, Malassezia can destroy the tight structure of the scalp's keratinocytes and the intercellular lipid layer, making the scalp prone to itching and sensitivity.

3. Generally, itchy scalp is caused by a combination of factors. For example, fungal infection, climate change, mental stress, environmental factors, and inappropriate choice of hair dyeing, perming, and shampoo products. An itchy scalp and oily hair are mutually reinforcing, and oily hair creates an environment that is conducive to fungal infections, leading to this vicious cycle.
