At what age does a baby start to learn to talk

At what age does a baby start to learn to talk

Parents attach great importance to the skills their children master at each stage. For example, how old is the baby when he starts to learn to speak? Generally, children are in the stage of learning to speak when they are nine to twelve months old. They will begin to imitate the pronunciation of adults. At this time, parents should communicate more with their children.

1. Every child’s situation is different.

Generally, the child's speech learning stage is from September to December: at this time, the baby begins to imitate the pronunciation of adults, begins to associate words with corresponding things, and begins to understand the meaning of words.

Before the age of one and a half, babies mainly say one or two words. For example, they may use "maomao" to mean "I want to wear a hat." These words cannot express the baby's meaning very well, and the pronunciation is often unclear, making them difficult to understand. After one and a half years old, the baby's vocabulary increases significantly, the range of word categories expands significantly, and he can speak sentences composed of multiple words. Although these sentences are very simple at the beginning and there are no syntactic rules to speak of, after all, the baby is beginning to use sentences to express his or her ideas. Afterwards, the sentence structure became more and more complex, the number of words increased, and the content expressed became richer and richer.

2. Talk to your baby more

Some parents seldom talk to their children, always thinking that the baby is too young and will not understand when they talk to him, so they always let the child perform a monologue. These parents may not know that the baby's brain cells are formed by repeated impressions of the stimulation received, seen and heard in the growing environment. The brain cells also grow due to these stimulations, and these stimulations directly affect the child's language development. There are several stages in language development: the first is the child's pronunciation stage, the second is the language understanding stage, and the third is the language expression stage. After the baby is born, you can train and guide the baby to pronounce. Parents should communicate with the baby constantly to keep the language information in the baby's brain.

Therefore, parents should also provide newborn babies with a rich language environment and sufficient language stimulation. For example, you should talk to your child when changing his/her diaper, bathing him/her, feeding him/her, playing with him/her, putting him/her to sleep, and when he/she wakes up. There is no need for too much language, the emphasis is on accumulation. A few simple words and sentences will become the cornerstone of the child's language development, and also lay the foundation for deepening the relationship between the child and the parents.

3. Encourage your baby to speak more

The child cannot speak yet and can only use actions or eyes to express certain needs. If parents see their child reaching for a cup, they will quickly give him water; if the child points at fruit while babbling, the parents will immediately meet his needs… After a long period of living this way where food is served and clothes are given to him, the child will think: I can get everything I want without saying anything, so why should I talk? Yes, this kind of behavior of parents makes children lose the desire and motivation to talk to others, and eventually they use their body language instead of verbal language to communicate with others.
