What is the difference between toothfish and silver cod

There is a big difference between toothfish and silver cod. Many people think that cod is a kind of fish we often eat. In fact, cod varieties are divided into many types. Among them, silver cod grows in high altitude areas and has a round head. Although the head is relatively large, its body is more nutritious and rich in collagen. However, the price, efficacy and taste of the two fish are different, but they need to be distinguished in normal times.

Introduction

The Antarctic toothfish is a large, slow-growing, bottom-dwelling fish that can reach 2.2 meters in length, weigh more than 100 kilograms, and live for 50 years. It takes about 10 to 12 years for this fish species to reach maturity, and the adult fish is about 70 cm to 80 cm long. It is mainly distributed in southern Chile, Argentina and the sub-Antarctic archipelago waters under the jurisdiction of Australia, France, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom, and lives in waters as deep as 2,500 meters.

The Antarctic toothfish is famous for its boneless appearance and tender, white, crystal-clear meat. The development of this fishery dates back to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the American and Norwegian longline industries first fished this species off the coast of Argentina and the Falkland Islands in the southwest Atlantic. As the price of Antarctic toothfish continues to rise and it has become a first-class edible fish, known as "white gold", with considerable profits, many countries have invested in this fishery. The catch reached a peak of 44,000 tons in 1995, and the main fishing grounds are concentrated in Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

Morphological characteristics

The fish body is quite elongated and slightly laterally flattened, cylindrical in shape. The head is pointed; the mouth is large, with the upper jaw slightly longer than the lower jaw. The teeth are small and form tooth bands, and are present on the upper and lower jaws, hoe bones, and palatine bones.

The head and body are covered with small round scales. The dorsal fin is separated, with 19 to 27 spines and 15 to 19 soft rays; the anal fin has 3 spines and 15 to 19 soft rays; the caudal fin is deeply forked.

The back of the body is dark blue-gray or green-gray; the belly is gray or light; except for the first dorsal fin, all fins have black outer edges. The body length can reach 120 cm. The lifespan can be up to 20 years.

Living habits

It generally lives near the bottom layer (water depth 0-2740 meters) and is a cold-water bottom-dwelling fish. Fish eggs are large

The eggs are ocean-drifting. After hatching, the young fish gradually migrate from shallow waters to the deep sea as their bodies grow. Omnivorous, mostly feed on shrimp, squid, worms or small fish. Young naked otter live in the middle and upper layers and gradually move to deeper levels as they grow older. Juveniles have been found at depths of 600 feet, while adults live at depths of 600 to 9,042 feet. As demersal fish, they live close to the seafloor, usually over sandy bottoms. They gain weight almost exclusively during the first ten years of life, with most reaching sexual maturity within six years.
