What causes low blood uric acid?

Uric acid is a product of purine in the body, which is a metabolic substance. Whether the blood uric acid level is high or low has an impact on human health. There are many reasons for low blood uric acid. In addition to lifestyle and diet reasons, it is not ruled out that it is caused by problems inside the body.

1. If you are a vegetarian for a long time, you may also have low uric acid levels because uric acid is mainly produced by the metabolism of a high-fat, high-protein diet.

2. Deficiencies in certain minerals and vitamins (such as zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12) may also lead to low uric acid levels.

3. The serum uric acid concentration in patients with liver disease is lowered, mostly because liver cells are damaged after suffering from liver disease, purine synthesis is reduced or the activity of purine oxidase is inhibited, which cannot oxidize purine into uric acid, resulting in a lower uric acid concentration in the blood.

4. The kidney's transport of uric acid goes through four steps: glomerular filtration, proximal tubular reabsorption, secretion, and reabsorption after secretion. If the renal tubular function is damaged, the reabsorption and secretion function of the proximal tubules will decrease or increase, which will lead to a decrease in blood uric acid concentration and cause renal hypouricemia.

5. The serum uric acid concentration of patients after fracture surgery decreases, which is related to the large-scale use of antibiotics. The toxic side effects of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics can cause liver and kidney damage, thereby reducing the blood uric acid concentration. Hypouricemia caused by diabetes is mostly due to increased excretion of uric acid by the kidneys.

6. If low uric acid is caused by diet, you can adjust your diet and then check the uric acid again to observe changes in the values. However, secondary hypouricemia caused by certain diseases should not be ignored. Patients with chronic nephritis, hepatitis, renal cancer and after fracture surgery may have low uric acid levels. Therefore, when uric acid levels are low, it is recommended to consult an endocrinologist to understand the real cause of low uric acid levels and take appropriate interventions.
