What are the main clinical manifestations of hyperthyroid crisis?

Hyperthyroid crisis is a common clinical disease. There are many main clinical manifestations of hyperthyroid crisis, and symptoms may appear in all systems of the body. The systemic manifestations of hyperthyroid crisis mainly include high fever symptoms. Generally, patients with hyperthyroid crisis may also have symptoms of tachycardia.

(1) Systemic manifestations: high fever, body temperature above 39°C, extreme sweating, flushed skin, sweat retention after dehydration, and pale complexion.

(2) Circulatory system symptoms: tachycardia, generally more than 140 beats per minute, sometimes with arrhythmias such as premature beats, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, atrioventricular block, etc. Some patients also have heart failure.

(3) Neurological manifestations: extreme irritability, mental disorder, and even coma or delirium.

(4) When a patient with apathetic hyperthyroidism experiences hyperthyroid crisis, he or she may show symptoms such as apathy, drowsiness, weakness, low body temperature, slow heart rate, and in severe cases, coma. It can be seen from this that apathetic hyperthyroid crisis is easily misdiagnosed. Apathetic hyperthyroidism is more likely to develop hyperthyroid crisis due to delayed diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. It is worth noting that although the latter is more common in the elderly, there are also reports of the disease occurring in children.

(5) Digestive system manifestations: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, often jaundice, and abnormal liver function tests.

(6) A small number of patients with no history of thyroid disease. It is more common in the elderly, and the clinical symptoms of hyperthyroidism are insidious and atypical. Easy to be missed diagnosis. When there are infection and stress factors, it is easy to induce hyperthyroid crisis, which should be paid attention to.
