What causes blood clots in the eyes?

Blood clots in the eyes are a concern for many people. Many reasons may cause this symptom, such as common subconjunctival hemorrhage and other medical histories, such as eye trauma, conjunctival inflammation, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, etc., which may manifest these symptoms.

1. Overview

The rupture and bleeding of small blood vessels in the conjunctiva and the accumulation of blood under the conjunctiva is called subconjunctival hemorrhage, which is called white eye hemorrhage in traditional Chinese medicine. Subconjunctival hemorrhages vary in shape and size, often in the form of sheets or clumps, and can also spread to the entire conjunctiva and form large areas. A small amount is bright red, while a large amount is raised and purple. It often occurs in the palpebral fissure area. As time goes by, the bleeding often tends to move toward the corneal edge, and some also gather under the conjunctiva due to gravity. The bleeding is bright red or dark red at first, then turns light yellow, and finally disappears without leaving any trace. The subjective symptoms are not obvious when the disease occurs, and are usually discovered by others. Bleeding may increase within 3 days of onset, and usually disappears in about a week without leaving any trace.

2. Causes

Strictly speaking, subconjunctival hemorrhage is just a symptom, not a real disease, and the exact cause is rarely found. It usually occurs in only one eye and can occur in any age group. Occasionally, there may be a history of severe coughing, vomiting, etc. Other possibly relevant medical histories include: trauma (eye injury or head compression), conjunctivitis, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, nephritis, blood diseases (such as leukemia, purpura, hemophilia), certain infectious diseases (such as sepsis, typhoid fever), etc.

3. Clinical manifestations

It is bright red at first and then gradually turns brown. It is usually absorbed on its own within 7 to 12 days. When the amount of bleeding is large, it can spread around the entire circumference of the eyeball. If the disease recurs, special emphasis should be placed on the examination of systemic diseases.

IV. Treatment

First, the cause of bleeding should be found and treated accordingly. In the early stage of bleeding, local cold compress can be applied, and hot compress can be applied after two days, twice a day, to promote the absorption of bleeding. Explain the situation to the patient to allay his or her concerns.

Chinese herbal medicine therapy: In severe cases, it is advisable to clear the lungs and cool the blood in the early stage. In the later stage, when the blood turns purple and dark, you can add products that can clear the meridians and disperse blood to promote the early dissipation of blood stasis. If it is caused by lung heat, it is advisable to clear the lungs and disperse blood. Tui Chi San can be used with modifications. In the prescription, Morus alba and Scutellaria baicalensis can clear lung heat, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora and Cortex Moutan can cool blood and disperse blood stasis, Pollen and Fructus Trichosanthis can disperse stagnation and promote body fluid, Licorice can clear heat and detoxify, Platycodon grandiflorum can benefit lung qi and carry the medicine upward. The combination of these medicines can achieve the effect of clearing the lungs and dispersing blood.
