What causes nail deformation

What causes nail deformation

The quality of a person's nails can give us a side view of their health. For example, if the nails are deformed, it may be due to malnutrition and calcium deficiency. In addition, if the nails are congested due to external force, it may also cause nail deformation. There is also a more serious situation, that is, thyroid disease, which can induce nail lesions and lead to deformation symptoms.

1. Malnutrition

Although it is called malnutrition, it is not necessarily caused by lack of certain vitamins or poor diet. Malnutrition of the nail may be related to insufficient local nutrition, or it may be due to other factors. Its common manifestations are deformation of toenails and separation of toenails.

2. Subungual stasis

Subungual bruises are also common, usually manifested by the nail turning purple or brown. Because the bleeding time varies, the color will vary. The reason for bruising is the rupture of blood vessels. The most common cause of blood vessel rupture is external force. If the amount of bleeding is small, it can be absorbed; however, if the amount of bleeding is large, it can cause nail separation or other deformation.

3. Thyroid disease

An estimated 20% of women experience increased brittle nails, also known as brittle nails. The cause of brittle nails is due to hypothyroidism, which requires appropriate treatment. A lack of iron in the diet can also cause nails to become thin, brittle and easily damaged. You need to eat more green leafy vegetables, red meat and eggs to increase your iron intake. Vitamin supplements such as B complex vitamins can also help improve brittle nails. In addition, lifestyle habits are also important. Nails that are often in a humid or dry environment will aggravate brittle nail disease.

4. Psoriasis

The surface of normal nails is smooth. If there are some small dot-like depressions on the surface of nails, it indicates that you may have health problems. The most common cause of pitting on the surface of the nails is psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by redness and recurring layers of dry, silvery-white scales that can affect the skin cells in the nail area. Therefore, the nail surface of patients with psoriasis is often not smooth, but has some dot-like depressions. However, if psoriasis is cured or controlled, the nails will gradually return to normal. Since nails only grow about 1 millimeter per week, it takes several months for a new healthy nail to replace the old pitted nail.

5. Fungal infection

Nail deformities and discoloration are common, and one of the most common causes of yellow nails is a fungal infection. As the infection worsens, the nail may shrink and the nail may thicken and crumble. In rare cases, yellow nails can indicate a more serious medical condition, such as severe thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes, or psoriasis.
