What are the hazards of ribavirin to young children

As we all know, ribavirin is an antiviral drug. Families with children know that they will take this medicine if they have a cold. However, if children take this medicine for a long time, they will produce antibodies, which will also cause some harm to the child’s body. I believe many parents are scared when they see this. The following is a detailed introduction to the harm of ribavirin to young children.

First, ribavirin is harmful to young children

Ribavirin granules are an antiviral drug. The most common adverse reaction when children take too much is gastrointestinal reaction. Just pay attention to whether the child has symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. If your baby has a cold, pay attention to changes in the child's body temperature. If there is a fever, it is best to add some other medications for treatment. Treatment can be carried out according to the treatment medicine prescribed by the doctor.

Second indication

It is used to prevent and treat influenza, parainfluenza, hepatitis A, B, and C, measles, mumps, chickenpox, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, viral keratitis, herpetic stomatitis, and adenovirus pneumonia in children, and may also have anti-tumor effects.

Pharmacological Action

It is a broad-spectrum antiviral drug that can inhibit inosine-5-phosphate dehydrogenase, block the conversion of inosine to guanylate, and thus inhibit the synthesis of viral RNA and DNA, and has an inhibitory effect on the replication of both DNA and RNA viruses.

Domestic clinical trials have proven that it is effective against hemorrhagic fever, especially for early-stage patients. It has the effects of reducing mortality, alleviating kidney damage, reducing bleeding tendency, and improving systemic symptoms.

Third note

1. Regularly conduct blood tests (hemoglobin level, white blood cell count, platelet count) and blood biochemistry (liver function, TSH) tests, especially hemoglobin tests (including before starting, in the second and fourth weeks of treatment). Monthly pregnancy testing is performed on women of childbearing potential.

2. Use with caution in patients with severe anemia. Ribavirin is not recommended for patients with thalassemia or sickle cell anemia. Ribavirin should not be used in patients with symptoms of pancreatitis or confirmed pancreatitis. Patients with a history of heart disease or significant symptoms of heart disease should not use ribavirin. If any symptoms of worsening heart disease occur while using ribavirin, the drug should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment should be given.

3. Use with caution in patients with abnormal liver and kidney function. Ribavirin is not recommended for patients with creatinine clearance <50 ml/min.

4. Ribavirin may interfere with diagnosis to a certain extent and may cause an increase in blood bilirubin (up to 25%). Large doses may cause a decrease in hemoglobin.

5. Take the medicine as early as possible, within the first 3 days of respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia. Ribavirin should not be used in patients who have not been laboratory confirmed to have respiratory syncytial virus infection.

Ribavirin is contraindicated in pregnant women. A small amount of the drug is excreted in breast milk. Because of the potential risk to infants, ribavirin is not recommended for breastfeeding women.
