What are the specific drugs for coccidia

Coccidia is actually a parasite that often appears in poultry. If it is not treated in time, it will lead to coccidiosis in poultry. This disease will cause great economic losses to farmers because parasites are produced and reproduced in the small intestine of poultry, which will cause tissue damage and easily cause poultry to suffer from dehydration and blood loss. So what are the specific drugs for coccidia?

First, what are the specific drugs for coccidiosis? Eimeria tenella is the most pathogenic of chicken coccidiosis, which parasitizes in the cecum and is commonly known as cecal coccidiosis. It is more common in chicks aged 21 to 50 days. At the beginning of the disease, the feathers stand upright, the neck is retracted, and the birds stand still. Later, due to the massive destruction of intestinal epithelial cells and poisoning of the body, the disease becomes serious and symptoms such as ataxia and bloody diarrhea appear. The mortality rate is high and the entire flock may even be wiped out. Rabbit coccidiosis is most common in young rabbits from weaning to 12 weeks of age. Seven rabbit coccidia pathogens have been reported in China. Except for Eimeria swirlingii which parasitizes the bile duct epithelium, the rest parasitize the intestinal epithelial cells. The sick rabbits are listless, lying motionless, suffering from alternating diarrhea and constipation, and have an enlarged abdominal circumference. When the liver is damaged, an enlarged liver may be found, and the visible mucosa may be slightly yellowed. In the late stage, neurological symptoms such as convulsions and paralysis may appear, and most of them die of extreme weakness. The mortality rate can sometimes reach over 80%. Under suitable conditions, the rate of proliferation and transmission of coccidia is quite alarming, and some cases even lead to sudden death without any obvious symptoms.

Second, coccidia have no intermediate host and can develop directly. The oocysts excreted with feces will develop into infectious oocysts after 2-3 days under suitable conditions. After being swallowed by rabbits, they will reproduce again in the rabbit's body. Therefore, it is very prevalent and difficult to completely eliminate coccidia. When the young rabbits are feeding, they eat the coccidia on the nipples of their mother rabbits and put them into their stomachs, where they lie dormant. After weaning, the environmental conditions change dramatically, which reduces the resistance of the young rabbits. The coccidia take the opportunity to multiply rapidly, causing a major outbreak of coccidiosis. Not only are coccidia ubiquitous in the rabbit breeding environment, but they also develop drug resistance very quickly. Therefore, the same effective drug will become less effective as the usage time increases, and the dosage will increase until it becomes ineffective.

What are the specific drugs for coccidiosis? Prevention is the main approach to coccidiosis. The preventive drugs commonly used as feed additives for chicken coccidiosis include amprolium, coccidiostat and amitraz, and the antibiotics include monensin, lasamycin and salinomycin. Giving chicks a small amount of infectious oocysts every day can give them immunity. Coccidiosis in rabbits can be prevented and treated with sulfonamides, such as sulfaquinoxaline, co-sulfadimethoxine and sulfathiazole. Not only coccidia, but other diseases as well, it is best to focus on prevention.
