Can gout patients eat lotus root?

Lotus root is a common food in our daily life. It is rich in nutrients. Eating lotus root regularly is good for the body and can also control the balance of diet. Clinically, the incidence of gout is relatively high, which is closely related to people’s daily diet. Therefore, gout patients must pay attention to their daily diet intake. So can gout patients eat lotus root?

1. Gout can eat lotus root

Lotus root is low in purine and can be eaten more often. Moreover, lotus root itself is a warm food. Pharmacologically speaking, warm foods have the effects of warming the middle, boosting yang, and dispersing cold, and are often used for cold diseases. Some gout patients suffer from yang deficiency. People with yang deficiency, qi and blood deficiency, or phlegm-damp constitution are afraid of cold, have indigestion, or are bloated, and are not suitable for eating cold foods. Therefore, the warm nature of lotus root can neutralize the "cold" in gout patients. Therefore, people with gout can eat warm foods such as lotus root.

2. Gout

Gout is a recurrent inflammatory disease caused by increased purine biosynthesis and metabolism, excessive uric acid production or poor uric acid excretion leading to increased uric acid in the blood, and deposition of urate crystals in the synovium, bursa, cartilage and other tissues of the joints. Gout is characterized by the presence of birefringent sodium urate monohydrate crystals in joint fluid and tophi.

3. Pay attention to your diet

Purine is the source of uric acid. Eating foods high in purine can easily induce hyperuricemia and trigger gout attacks. Currently, foods known to contain high amounts of purine mainly include animal offal such as liver, kidney, heart, and pancreas, fish such as sardines, anchovies, cod, salmon and their roe, and meats such as bacon, lamb legs, pheasant, and pigeon. Therefore, gout patients should eat less or no the above foods. They can appropriately choose fresh pork, chicken, freshwater fish and milk to supplement a certain amount of protein, and eat more fresh vegetables to make the diet more reasonable and help prevent gout attacks.
