What happened to the lump on my eye?

The growth of lumps on the eyes not only affects the image and appearance, but also hinders the normal activities of the eyes. This situation is mostly caused by bacterial or viral infection, especially those with seborrheic dermatitis are more likely to develop lumps on the eyes. In medicine, this type of lumps is also called stye. You should pay attention to protecting your eyes, pay attention to hygiene and cleanliness, do not overwork, pay attention to the combination of work and rest, and avoid contact with unclean environments.

1) There are two types of styes: internal and external:

1. Internal stye refers to an acute suppurative inflammation of the meibomian glands in the eyelids. Its symptoms are similar to those of an external stye. However, because the inflammation is located in the relatively solid tarsal plate tissue, the pain is more severe and the inflammation lasts longer. After a few days, yellow pus spots appear on the surface of the tarsal conjunctiva, and finally the tarsal conjunctiva ruptures and pus is discharged. The inflammation gradually disappears and the disease is cured.

2. External stye refers to acute inflammation of the sebaceous glands or hair follicles at the root of the eyelashes. It is characterized by localized redness, swelling, pain, small nodules, and tenderness of the eyelid. In severe cases, the entire eyelid becomes red and swollen, and the preauricular lymph nodes on the affected side are swollen and tender. After a few days, yellow pus spots appeared at the roots of the hair follicles, which soon burst and discharged pus. The symptoms disappeared and the patient recovered.

2) There are four reasons for stye:

1. Overwork of the eyes causes the orbicularis oculi muscles around the eyes to contract, thus blocking the gland opening.

2. Rubbing your eyes with dirty hands can cause bacteria to enter through the gland opening.

3. Food-related allergies, such as some people are addicted to seafood, chocolate, etc.

4. If you have recurrent styes, you should check your entire body for diabetes

3) Things to note after getting a stye:

1. When your eyelids are red, swollen and have pus spots, never squeeze them with your hands. Because the eyelids are rich in blood vessels, the ocular veins are connected to the orbital veins and facial veins, and to the intracranial cavernous sinuses. In addition, the ocular veins lack veno-canalicular valves. When the abscess is squeezed, the blood will flow back in all directions, causing the inflammation to spread and causing serious complications, such as orbital cellulitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis and sepsis, which are life-threatening and should be taken seriously.

2. Go to the hospital and ask an ophthalmologist for treatment in time. If the wound has become festered, you can perform an incision to drain the pus. This can not only promote early recovery but also reduce scars.

4) The difference between stye and chalazion:

1. Stye is an acute bacterial infection and inflammation of hair follicles or glands, so the eyelids will become red, swollen, hot and painful. The site of occurrence is at the eyelid margin.

2. Chalazion is a lump caused by chronic inflammation. It is less painful and occurs farther away from the eyelid margin. The resulting lump can be felt through the eyelid, or when the eyelid is turned over, the lump can be seen on the conjunctiva of the eyelid.

5) How to treat stye?

The stye is a sty. When a stye first occurs, you can apply ice to the swollen and painful eyelids, use anti-inflammatory eye drops, and take oral antibiotics if necessary. Most cases can disappear within 3-4 days; if the gland is swollen and festering, surgical incision and drainage are required.
