Is the woody datura flower poisonous?

The Datura flower has always been a mysterious flower. It has been given a lot of mysterious colors in various movies and novels. For example, it is said to have the ability to cure all kinds of poisons, maintain eternal beauty, etc. However, movies are ultimately fictional, and the Datura flower is actually a very common plant. Some people may accidentally eat this plant, which may cause some discomfort. So is the woody Datura flower poisonous? Let me introduce it to you below.

The woody datura flower is poisonous.

There are many legends about Datura, and people have given it a lot of mystery. In fact, Datura is also an ordinary plant, and we need to be careful not to eat it by mistake. Datura is also known as datura, big trumpet flower, mountain eggplant, etc. It grows wild in fields, ditches, roadsides, river banks, hillsides, etc. Its whole body is poisonous. Many cases of Datura poisoning occur in my country every year.

The reasons for poisoning are: 1. People are unaware that it is poisonous and mistakenly eat its fruits or seeds; 2. Datura seedlings are eaten mixed with green leafy vegetables such as spinach; 3. Datura seeds are mixed with bean grains and processed into bean products for consumption. The main toxic ingredient of Datura is scopolamine. The incubation period of poisoning after accidental ingestion is 20 minutes to 3 hours, usually about 1 hour. The initial symptoms are thirst, dry tongue, hoarseness, dry skin, and facial flushing, followed by dilated pupils, blurred vision, double vision, hallucinations, and dizziness. In severe cases, the heart rate increases, the patient becomes irritable and restless, cannot control his behavior, speaks and acts insanely, cries and laughs at random, speaks incoherently, and answers irrelevant questions. Some patients suffer from delirium, convulsions, seizures, coma, and may die from respiratory failure.

What other common plants in our lives are poisonous?

1. Weeping Goddess of Mercy: The white juice in the rhizome of Weeping Goddess of Mercy is poisonous. It will cause strong irritation and itching if it comes in contact with the skin, and it will cause severe conjunctivitis or even blindness if it comes in contact with the eyes. If the rhizomes are eaten, it will cause discomfort in the mouth and throat, and in severe cases it may cause suffocation, leading to cardiac paralysis and death.

2. Oleander: Oleander is truly the “king of dust collectors”. However, its flowers, leaves, branches and bark are all poisonous. If taken in excess, symptoms of poisoning will appear. The milky white juice secreted by oleander contains a toxic substance called oleandrin, which can cause poisoning if ingested accidentally. After a person is poisoned, the initial symptoms are mainly gastrointestinal, such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc., and then cardiac symptoms may appear, including palpitations, slow and irregular pulse, etc.; in severe cases, dilated pupils, bloody stools, drowsiness, convulsions and even death may occur. Do not touch the juice or consume it, it is harmless to the human body.

We will encounter many poisonous plants in our lives, but we usually don’t pay attention to them. I would like to remind everyone: if you are not familiar with them, do not easily try to eat wild fruits on the roadside. In many cases, wild flowers and fruits are poisonous, so avoid poisoning.
