Is the cure rate of osteosarcoma high?

At present, many patients' families still believe that osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor and that osteosarcoma cannot be cured. Indeed, the treatment of malignant bone tumors has always been a difficult problem in orthopedic treatment. However, in the past 30 years, due to the application of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the survival rate of patients with malignant bone tumors has been significantly improved. So, is the cure rate of osteosarcoma high? Let's find out.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is very dangerous to the patient's life and health. It is not only highly malignant, but also progresses rapidly. If it is not treated properly, the tumor will metastasize within half a year to a year, which not only increases the difficulty of treatment, but also seriously affects the patient's cure rate, and even quickly leads to the patient's death. At present, with the continuous advancement of medical technology, many tumor diseases can be cured through reasonable treatment. So, can osteosarcoma be cured? Reasonable treatment methods are the key to whether osteosarcoma can be cured.

At present, the treatment of osteosarcoma adopts a standardized comprehensive treatment model, which greatly improves the treatment effect and the survival rate of patients. Before the 1970s, the treatment of osteosarcoma was mainly based on simple surgery, and patients could only undergo amputation or joint separation, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 25%; now surgery plus radiotherapy and chemotherapy before and after surgery are used, and the 5-year survival rate of patients can reach more than 50%. With the rapid development of modern Chinese medicine treatment technology, some patients can achieve a 5-year survival rate of up to 80% under the combined treatment of Chinese and Western medicine. Therefore, osteosarcoma patients must adopt standardized comprehensive treatment in a timely manner after the diagnosis of the disease to achieve better treatment effects.

In the past 30 years, the survival rate of patients with malignant bone tumors has increased significantly, which is mainly due to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy, also known as induction chemotherapy, is chemotherapy given after a biopsy confirms the diagnosis and before extensive surgical resection of the tumor. Advantages of this regimen:

(1) For patients with metastatic tumors, neoadjuvant chemotherapy can treat potential metastatic lesions in advance, thus avoiding delays in chemotherapy due to surgery and postoperative recovery time.

(2) Preoperative chemotherapy can shrink the primary tumor, reduce local edema, make the boundary between the tumor and the surrounding normal soft tissue clearer, and make limb-salvage treatment safer and more feasible.

(3) The necrosis rate in tumor specimens can determine the patient's prognosis and provide a basis for adjusting chemotherapy drugs after tumor resection.

Whether osteosarcoma can be cured depends on early detection and early treatment. As long as it can be detected in the early stage and a professional cancer hospital is selected for regular comprehensive treatment, osteosarcoma can be completely controlled or even cured. Of course, the early treatment of osteosarcoma is the most effective, so we recommend that teenagers detect osteosarcoma early, including regular physical examinations. If the patient discovers that the disease has developed to the middle and late stages, the patient's chance of recovery is relatively low, but at this time, the patient needs to receive active treatment to maximize the patient's life, improve the patient's quality of life, and even achieve the goal of recovery or long-term survival with the tumor.
