Function of cerebrospinal fluid

Function of cerebrospinal fluid

The human brain is a very important organ, and the structure of the human brain is very complex. The parts that make up the human brain are also quite important. If a problem occurs in any part of the brain, people will lose some elements of health. Cerebrospinal fluid is a component of the human brain. Moreover, the cerebrospinal fluid in the human body is also very complex, and some people need to pay attention to the appropriate amount of cerebrospinal fluid secreted. Cerebrospinal fluid plays a very important role in the human brain. But what is the function of cerebrospinal fluid?

Formation of cerebrospinal fluid: Cerebrospinal fluid is mainly produced by the choroidal membranes of the ventricles, and a small amount is produced by the capillaries of the pia mater and arachnoid membrane and the extracellular fluid of the brain cells through the ependymal epithelium of the ventricles. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced within the ventricles and flows from the ventricles into the subarachnoid space under the action of hydrostatic pressure, and then returns to the venous system through the arachnoid granules. The villi on the arachnoid granulations protrude into the dural sinuses, acting as one-way valves, allowing only cerebrospinal fluid to enter the veins and preventing blood from flowing back.

Function of cerebrospinal fluid: Cerebrospinal fluid plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the internal environment of the central nervous system. ① Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain tissue, effectively buffering the pressure and preventing impact on the brain tissue during concussion. At the same time, when suddenly displaced by external force, it will not cause excessive tension and rupture of brain tissue, but will buffer the pressure on the brain and spinal cord, thus protecting and supporting the brain and spinal cord. ② There are no lymphatic vessels in the brain and spinal cord. The cerebrospinal fluid circulating in the central nervous system acts as lymphatic fluid, providing nutrition to the brain tissue and transporting some metabolic products. ③Cerebrospinal fluid plays an important role in maintaining the osmotic pressure and acid-base balance of brain tissue. ④Through the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, the intracranial pressure can be regulated to a certain extent.

The cerebrospinal fluid of a normal adult is about 100-150 ml, with a specific gravity of 1, and is weakly alkaline. It does not contain red blood cells, but contains about 5 lymphocytes per microliter. Normal cerebrospinal fluid has a certain chemical composition and pressure, which plays an important role in maintaining relative stability of intracranial pressure. When suffering from central nervous system diseases, a lumbar puncture to draw cerebrospinal fluid is often required to assist in diagnosis. The properties and pressure of cerebrospinal fluid are affected by many factors. If the central nervous system is diseased and the metabolism of nerve cells is disturbed, the properties and composition of cerebrospinal fluid will change; if the circulation pathway of cerebrospinal fluid is blocked, intracranial pressure will increase. Therefore, when the central nervous system is damaged, cerebrospinal fluid testing becomes one of the important auxiliary diagnostic methods.
