1. River crab, also called "crab" or "hairy crab", belongs to the class Crustacea of the phylum Arthropoda. The head and thorax of the river crab are combined to form the cephalothorax, which is square and hard in texture. There is a pair of eyes at the front of the body and two pairs of very sharp crab teeth on the sides. The pair of appendages at the front end of the crab are called chelipeds, which are covered with fluff; behind the chelipeds are four pairs of walking legs, which are laterally flattened and long; the abdominal limbs have degenerated.

2. The gender of river crabs can be distinguished from their abdomens: the female abdomen is round, while the male abdomen is triangular. River crabs often burrow in the muddy banks of rivers, lakes and swamps. They are active at night and feed on fish, shrimp, animal carcasses and grains. Every autumn they migrate to river estuaries to lay eggs, which hatch in March to May of the following year. After developing into young crabs, they swim upstream in rivers and continue to develop and grow in fresh water. The meat of river crabs is tender and fresh, and is a food that is deeply loved by people.

3. According to the "Compendium of Materia Medica", crabs have the effects of relaxing muscles and replenishing qi, regulating the stomach and digestion, dredging meridians, dispersing heat, and dispersing blood stasis. Crab meat is salty and cold in nature. It has the functions of clearing away heat, removing blood stasis, and nourishing yin. It can treat bruises, tendon injuries, fractures, and allergic dermatitis. Calcined crab shell ash mixed with honey can be applied externally to treat wasp stings or other unknown swellings and toxins. Crab meat has a good effect on various cancers.
