Are neurological diseases hereditary?

As we all know, neurological diseases are very difficult to treat. Are neurological diseases hereditary? Actually, it does. Therefore, many people with genetic diseases will not give birth to the next generation. Because many neurological diseases are hereditary. So, are all neurological diseases hereditary? Today we will give you a brief introduction, and we hope that everyone will pay attention to avoid suffering from hereditary neurological diseases.

When a disease occurs, what is most worrying is that the patient's life can no longer continue as usual. Severe cases may even make the patient unable to work. No one wants to see themselves or their family members suffer from this disease, so everyone wants to know more about the cause of epilepsy, hoping to stay away from the disease. So, is epilepsy hereditary? Why do people get epilepsy?

We know that some diseases with complex pathologies are hereditary to a certain extent. Epilepsy, as a disease that occurs in the brain, is undoubtedly hereditary, but we cannot conclude that all types of epilepsy are hereditary.

Generally speaking, it is divided into three major categories. We divide epilepsy into secondary epilepsy and primary epilepsy.

1. Primary epilepsy accounts for about 20%, and this part of patients is mainly caused by genetic factors, such as single gene inheritance, polygene inheritance and other genetic factors.

2. The factors of secondary epilepsy are relatively broad, starting from pregnancy, in the uterus, including intrauterine infection, hypoxia, asphyxia, ischemia, and injuries after birth, such as intracranial infection, tumors, and various other diseases. Secondary epilepsy manifestations occur after brain function damage caused by diseases such as brain trauma. This is also a large category.

3. There is also a part of epilepsy whose cause has not been found so far. No primary, genetic factors, or secondary factors have been found. In this part, the reasons can usually be found eventually. Now it is classified as a hidden type. So it is mainly caused by three major types of factors. Epilepsy is very harmful, and its treatment must target the cause.

What types of epilepsy are likely to be inherited?

1. Familial temporal lobe epilepsy. If the patient's epilepsy is familial temporal lobe epilepsy, the chance of the disease being inherited is very high. Patients with familial temporal lobe epilepsy must take this into consideration when planning to have children and not act blindly.

2. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. This type is a common epilepsy syndrome that begins around puberty and has a variety of inheritance patterns. Most people believe that the gene is located on chromosome arm 6 (6q), but due to the heterogeneity of patient sources and genetic heterogeneity, there are many other types of inheritance, which may be caused by gene mutations in more than one site.

3. Progressive myoclonic epilepsy. Most cases of this disease develop during adolescence, and most are autosomal recessive, with the gene in most families located at 21q (some at 8q).

Epilepsy is hereditary in nature, so if someone in your family suffers from the disease, then prevention work is essential. Of course, not all cases of epilepsy are hereditary and need to be treated differently. Don't worry too much.
