What is the difference between a distillation flask and a round bottom flask

In people's real life, flasks are basically not often used, but in chemical laboratories, flasks are essential tools. Whether it is a flat-bottom flask or a round-bottom flask, it is very useful. Many well-known inventions and experiments were realized through them. So the question is, many people don't know much about flasks. What is the difference between a distillation flask and a round-bottom flask?

Round bottom flask, spherical bottom

Flat bottom flask, flat bottom

The distillation flask has a tube at the neck and a spherical bottom.

It can be seen that the flat-bottomed flask can be placed directly on the table without a stand, but if heated, the spherical bottom is better for heat dispersion and is not easily damaged.

Therefore, flat-bottom flasks are generally used for reactions at room temperature, while round-bottom flasks and distillation flasks are used for reactions under heating.

The distillation flask already has a conduit in its structure, so if you are preparing gas, it is more convenient and you don't need to make a hole in the stopper.

In addition, the largest application of distillation flask is for fractionation and distillation, which is also the origin of its name.

Safe use

① It should be placed on an asbestos net for heating so that it is heated evenly; when heating, there should be no water droplets on the outer wall of the flask.

②Flat-bottom flasks cannot be used for heating for a long time.

③ When not heating, if a flat-bottom flask is used as a reaction container, there is no need to fix it with an iron stand.

Main uses: (1) Reactors between liquid and solid or between liquids.

(2) Assemble the gas reaction generator (normal temperature, heating).

(3) Distill or fractionate liquids (using a flask with a branch tube, also called a distillation flask).

Precautions for use:

(1) The liquid injected shall not exceed 2/3 of its volume and shall not be less than 1/3 of its volume.

(2) Use asbestos mesh when heating to ensure uniform heating.

(3) Distillation or fractionation must be used in conjunction with rubber stoppers, catheters, condensers, etc. Distillation flask

A glass container used for liquid distillation or fractional distillation of substances. It is often used in conjunction with condensers, liquid receiving tubes and liquid receivers. It can also be equipped with a gas generator.
