Sequelae of pacemaker implantation

Sequelae of pacemaker implantation

Doctors often use pacemakers when performing rescue operations. Simply put, it is because the electrical stimulation forces the heart to resume beating. Installing a pacemaker is a treatment method for arrhythmias and generally there are no sequelae. Although there are no sequelae, there may be problems with the installation of a pacemaker. First, the pacemaker should be kept away from high- and low-frequency electrical appliances at work. Second, it needs to rest for a period of time after installation so that the pacemaker cannot be fixed.

A pacemaker is an electronic therapeutic device implanted in the body. It emits electrical pulses powered by a battery through a pulse generator. The electrical pulses are conducted through wire electrodes to stimulate the myocardium that the electrodes contact, causing the heart to become excited and contracted, thereby achieving the purpose of treating heart dysfunction caused by certain arrhythmias. Implantation of a pacemaker is an effective treatment for severe bradyarrhythmias. As long as you master the appropriate indications and pay attention to regular follow-up after surgery, there will generally be no obvious sequelae.

Don't do these things with a pacemaker

Avoid the influence of high- and low-frequency electrical appliances. When high- and low-frequency electrical appliances are working, they will inhibit the pacemaker from releasing pulses and cause the pacemaker to stop working. Therefore, patients should not get close to working electromagnetic therapy devices, electrical cauterization devices, etc. Electric drills should not be used for tooth fillings, and spectrum or electromagnetic wave therapies should not be performed.

Usually, the pacemaker can be fixed on the endocardium 3 months after implantation. In order to avoid dislocation of the pacemaker lead, you should sleep in a supine or left lateral position within 1 month after surgery. Within 3 months after surgery, you should avoid strenuous activities of the upper limb on the side with the pacemaker and avoid raising your arm. However, there is no problem with daily activities such as washing, eating and other light activities.

Three months after the pacemaker is installed, you can engage in activities such as swimming, running, dancing, and traveling if your physical strength allows. Don't forget to bring your pacemaker identification card when you travel so that local doctors can understand your condition if any problems arise.

Mobile phones can interfere with pacemakers, so do not put your phone in your pocket close to your pacemaker. If the pacemaker is placed on the right chest, you should make or answer calls on the left side. In addition, when talking on the mobile phone, you must be at least 10 cm away from the pacemaker on your chest, and each call should not be too long, and try not to exceed 30 seconds.
