Treatment of early laryngeal cancer

Treatment of early laryngeal cancer

The larynx is the main respiratory channel of the human body and also the organ of pronunciation. It is connected to the pharynx above and the trachea below. In addition to the respiratory function, the larynx also has the functions of vocalization and swallowing. For patients with early laryngeal cancer, preserving the larynx is the key.

Total laryngectomy has always been the dominant treatment for laryngeal cancer. Its advantages are that the cancerous tissue can be removed relatively thoroughly and the chance of local recurrence is relatively small. However, its disadvantages are that the patient will lose his larynx for life, lose his normal language function, and cannot guarantee the normal physiological respiratory pathway, which greatly reduces the patient's quality of life. This is really a pity, especially for patients with early laryngeal cancer whose tumors are still localized.

With the continuous development of medicine, it has been found that laryngeal cancer is relatively sensitive to radiation. In addition, with the continuous improvement of radiotherapy technology and equipment in recent years, radiotherapy has become the main treatment method for early laryngeal cancer in clinical practice. For some early patients, surgery is indeed unnecessary and the goal of cure can be achieved through radiotherapy alone. Saving the throat is the key. In addition, radiotherapy can also be used as an auxiliary treatment method before and after laryngeal cancer surgery, which can not only increase and consolidate the treatment effect, but also make up for the shortcomings of surgical treatment.

Therefore, the key to whether laryngeal cancer patients can save their throats through radiotherapy alone is early detection. Once abnormal symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, abnormal throat sensation, and blood in cough sputum appear, you must seek medical attention in time to grasp the best time for treatment.
