Determine the radiotherapy plan for bone cancer based on the purpose of treatment

Radiotherapy is a commonly used auxiliary treatment method in the treatment of bone cancer. Before bone cancer patients undergo radiotherapy, determining the treatment goals based on their overall condition and choosing the correct radiotherapy method, irradiation range, radiotherapy time and dosage will help achieve the best treatment effect and improve the patient's quality of life.

Objective 1: Complete tumor control

For patients with bone cancer who are likely to survive for a long time or have the possibility of being cured, the irradiation field should extend beyond the lesion to a certain extent, and the radiation dose can be given at 50-60Gv/5-6 weeks. At the same time, attention should be paid to protecting the surrounding normal tissues and organs. Chemotherapy alone cannot completely cure the tumor, and other anti-cancer therapies are often required.

Objective 2: Control tumor development and restore function within a certain period of time

The chemotherapy dose to control the development of tumors and restore function is generally 30-40Gv/2-4 weeks, which is mainly suitable for bone cancer patients with an expected survival time of more than half a year. This chemotherapy regimen is also suitable for patients with bone metastasis in important parts such as the spine or pelvis and those who have pathological fractures and neurological dysfunction to control the continued development of tumors.

Purpose 3: Simple short-term pain relief

For critically ill patients with difficulty in moving and bone cancer patients whose expected survival period is no more than 3 months, in order to alleviate their symptoms, one to several large-dose irradiations, i.e. 40 to 80 Gy each time, can be given to the most painful lesions, which usually has a good analgesic effect.
