Symptoms and signs of mediastinal teratoma

Teratoma is a very small tumor that does not cause much harm to the body, and it is also a very rare disease. For many patients with teratoma, it is not easy to detect because of its small size and lack of function, but some symptoms will still be manifested. Below I will introduce the symptoms and signs of mediastinal teratoma in detail.

Patients with benign teratomas have no symptoms and may not feel any discomfort even if the tumor is huge.

Symptoms include chest pain, cough, and dyspnea. Occasionally, the tumor ruptures and penetrates the tracheobronchial tree. The contents of the cyst can be coughed up, often containing bean curd-like sebum and even hair and teeth. Tumors that penetrate the pericardium can cause acute cardiac tamponade.

The pleural effusion is caused by piercing the mediastinal pleura. A large tumor can cause compression symptoms on the surrounding tissues. For example, compression of the trachea and bronchi can cause coughing and dyspnea, and can also easily lead to atelectasis, pneumonia and other symptoms. Hoarseness can occur when the tumor compresses the recurrent laryngeal nerve, and superior vena cava syndrome can occur when the mass compresses the superior vena cava.

Most malignant tumors will have different symptoms, mainly chest pain, cough and dyspnea, as well as weight loss and fever. If the tumor grows rapidly and invades or metastasizes to surrounding organs, corresponding symptoms and signs will appear.
