The liver is an organ where various malignant tumors are prone to metastasis and is one of the most common sites for metastatic cancer. Tumors can metastasize to the liver through the blood or lymphatic pathways. Common liver metastases are mostly from the digestive tract, lungs, pancreas, kidneys, and breasts. Generally, the primary cancer symptoms appear first, and the metastatic cancer symptoms appear in the late stage. Since the mesenteric blood vessels drain into the portal vein, the chance of colorectal cancer metastases to the liver is relatively high. 10% to 20% of patients have liver metastases during the first surgery, and about 40% to 50% of patients will have liver metastases about 2 years after surgery. The liver metastasis rate of colorectal cancer patients at autopsy can be as high as 36% to 81%. |
