How to treat colon cancer

How to treat colon cancer

Early stage colon cancer can be treated with endoscopic resection or surgery. In order to reduce the recurrence rate and improve the survival rate, mid- and late-stage colon cancer requires comprehensive treatment, such as adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

1. Surgery is the most important treatment for colon cancer. Endoscopic or surgical resection should be performed promptly if the cancer is found early, and regular follow-up examinations should be performed after surgery. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are generally not required. The 5-year survival rate of early colon cancer is 80%-90%. For locally advanced colon cancer, surgery is still the only means of cure, and about 30%-50% of patients with locally advanced colon cancer can be cured through timely surgery.

2. Advanced colon cancer requires comprehensive treatment, supplemented by surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For patients with difficult resection or local tumor conditions that are not suitable for primary surgery, preoperative radiotherapy can reduce the tumor volume, increase the chance of resection surgery, and reduce postoperative tumor growth and metastasis. Postoperative chemotherapy can treat recurrent or advanced colon cancer in high-risk stage II and III patients. Chemotherapy is an important means to control tumor progression and prolong survival.

3. In addition to surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, advanced colon cancer should also be combined with other treatments such as immunotherapy, nutritional therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine. Maintaining a good attitude and facing the disease positively are important aspects of achieving good treatment results.

Early detection and early treatment of colon cancer are very effective. Even in the middle and late stages of colon cancer, there is a chance of cure if comprehensive surgical treatment is adopted and a good attitude is maintained.
