Why does my left eye keep twitching

Why does my left eye keep twitching

In life, you never know when the corners of your eyes will twitch, and the left and right eyes may twitch in different situations. Then people formed a saying that the left eye twitching means good fortune, while the right eye twitching means disaster. Everyone’s specific situation is different, so it is recommended that everyone should believe in science. Eye twitching can also affect people’s emotions. So why does the corner of my left eye keep twitching?

Sometimes, a person’s eyelids will suddenly twitch and cannot be stopped even if they want to. This may even happen several times a day or for several days in a row. Therefore, there has been a saying among the people in our country since ancient times: if the left eye twitches, it means good fortune, while if the right eye twitches, it means disaster. In fact, this has no scientific basis at all.

We know that the structure of the eyes is very delicate, and the outside of the eyeball is protected by two soft and elastic eyelids. The eyelids are medically called eyelids. They have a thin layer of skin on the surface and a layer of muscle inside. One of the muscles is responsible for opening and closing the eyes. It grows around the upper and lower eyelids in a circle and is called the orbicularis oculi muscle. The opening and closing of the eyes is entirely accomplished by the relaxation and contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle. What we call eyelid twitching is actually caused by abnormal excitement of the nerves controlling the eyelid muscles. That is, part of the orbicularis oculi muscle cannot contract continuously and independently in a short period of time, which keeps pulling the eye skin over it.

The normal activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle is controlled by nerves, so people can open or close their eyes at will. When the orbicularis oculi muscle is abnormally stimulated, it may cause abnormal twitching. Generally, eyelid twitching occurs more frequently when one is over-tired, uses eyes for too long or lacks sleep. Other factors such as strong light, stimulation from drugs, foreign objects blown into the eyes, frequent smoking and drinking, etc. can also irritate the eyes and cause eyelid twitching. These are all physiological phenomena and have nothing to do with human "blessings" or "misfortunes".

The most common eyelid twitching is "muscle twitching" of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which twitches for a few seconds to a few minutes each time. Under normal circumstances, it will recover automatically after a period of time. You can also close your eyes and rest, or apply a hot towel to your eyes. Pay attention to a balanced diet and adequate sleep to shorten the duration of eyelid twitching. If your eyelids continue to twitch, you should see a doctor immediately. If your eyelids twitch along with the muscles on half of your face, eyebrows and corners of your mouth, it may be a spasm caused by stimulation of the facial nerve. You should actively seek treatment, otherwise you will develop facial paralysis.

As for some small accidents that may occur in daily life, such as falling while walking, hurting your hand by a machine, getting sick, etc., even if they happen when your eye is twitching, they are just a coincidence and cannot be linked to eye twitching. Eyelid twitching should be treated symptomatically according to different situations, and do not believe in superstitions and delay treatment.
