[Source] "Yao Xing Kao"

[Source] It is a volatile oil obtained by distilling the dried buds (male cloves) of the Myrtaceae plant Syzygium aromaticum. Synonymous with Eugenia aromaticum. or Eugenia caryophyllata. (in ancient times, it was mostly oil extracted from female cloves).

[Plant morphology] The lilac tree is an evergreen tree, up to 10-20 meters tall, with oval leaves, large single leaves, opposite, and leathery; the flowers are red, with cymes, and the buds are white at first, then turn green, and turn red when they grow to 1.5-2 cm long, at which time they can be harvested. The flower buds are used as medicine and are called male cloves. The calyx receptacle is long, with 4 sepals and petals; the fruit is oblong and is called mother clove. [Origin] Cloves are native to Indonesia. Currently, the main regions producing cloves are Indonesia, Zanzibar and Madagascar. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka also produce cloves. In 2005, Indonesia's clove production accounted for about 80% of the world's total production. There are also small amounts of it grown in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and southern Yunnan in my country.

[Medicinal material] It is a light yellow or colorless clear oil with a special aroma of cloves. If exposed to air or stored for a long time, it will gradually become thicker and turn brown in color. Insoluble in water, easily soluble in alcohol, ether or glacial acetic acid. The specific gravity is 1.038~1.060.

[Nature and flavor] "Compendium of Materia Medica": sweet and spicy, very hot in nature.

【Functions and indications】Warms the stomach and kidneys.

Treat stomach cold pain and swelling, hiccups, vomiting and diarrhea, arthralgia, hernia pain, bad breath, and toothache.

① "Medicinal Properties": Strengthens yang and warms the kidneys. Treat hernia pain and coldness.

② Wang Dianxiang's "Pharmacognosy": Used for gastrointestinal gas, colic, indigestion, nausea and vomiting; rheumatic pain, neuralgia, toothache.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral administration: add a small amount to decoction or drink with wine. For external use: Apply to the affected area.

[Selected prescriptions] ① For treating severe hiccups and vomiting due to stomach cold: rub clove oil thoroughly into Zhongwan.

② Treat stomachache caused by cold: Take clove oil with good wine.

③Warm Dantian and eliminate watery diarrhea: Apply clove oil to warm the navel plaster.

④ To relieve ascites: apply clove oil on the navel.

⑤Treat arthralgia: rub clove oil on the painful area.

⑥Treat bad breath: brush your teeth with clove oil.

⑦ To detoxify crab: take one drop of clove oil with ginger soup. (①The following formula is from Gangmu Shiyi)

⑧Treat toothache caused by tooth decay (non-inflammatory toothache): Dip a small cotton ball in a little clove oil and insert it into the cavity.
