What's wrong with a girl's delayed menarche?

Menstrual period is a necessary stage in a girl’s growth and development, and it is also a sign that every girl’s body is maturing. Menarche usually occurs when we are twelve or thirteen years old and in junior high school. But this is not absolute. Some girls may have their period earlier, while some girls may not have their period until they are fourteen or fifteen years old. It has something to do with one's physical constitution and also with genetic factors.

A girl's body begins to transform from her menarche. When her menarche comes, her breasts will gradually begin to develop and grow, and her buttocks will become fuller and rounder. At this time, parents should correctly guide their children to understand these changes in their bodies and convey to them the concept of health. Generally, if a mother's menstruation starts early, her daughter's menstruation will also start early.

A girl's first menstrual period is called menarche. Most girls have their first period between the ages of 12 and 14. Before menarche, girls' breasts begin to develop, their height grows suddenly, and some have already grown pubic or armpit hair. Generally speaking, menarche is often anovulatory menstruation, and ovulation occurs several months to a year after menarche.

When a woman reaches puberty, under the influence of the hypothalamus and pituitary hormones, the ovaries produce sex hormones, which can stimulate the development of sexual organs and breasts, and begin to grow armpit hair and pubic hair; at the same time, the egg cells in the follicles in the ovaries gradually mature, and the mature follicles rupture and expel the egg cells out of the ovaries. At this time, the fallopian tube umbrella absorbs the expelled egg into the fallopian tube lumen. After ovulation, the remaining cells in the follicle grow and increase rapidly and become yellow, which is called the "corpus luteum". It secretes progesterone, which prompts the endometrial glands to secrete a nutrient-rich mucus in preparation for receiving the fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum will atrophy 9 to 10 days after ovulation, the secretion of estrogen and progesterone will decrease, and the endometrium will gradually atrophy, fall off, and bleed, which is the manifestation of menstruation.

Menarche usually occurs during puberty, usually between the ages of 12 and 18. Very rarely, menstruation occurs before the age of 10 or after the age of 18.

The early or late menarche is generally believed to be closely related to genetics. If the mother has her first menstruation early, her daughter will also have her first menstruation early; if the mother has her first menstruation late, her daughter may also have her first menstruation late. But this is not absolute, it will also be affected by other factors. The early or late menarche is also related to living in cities or rural areas. The age of menarche in urban girls is earlier than that in rural girls. The reason is that it is generally believed that among people with a high standard of living, good nutrition and health, girls not only grow faster in body, but also have their first menstruation earlier. Some people also believe that because the urban lifestyle increases contact between the sexes, some have more opportunities to come into contact with sexual knowledge, which in turn causes the nervous system to regulate the endocrine glands, causing the sex-related endocrine system to become active prematurely, thus bringing forward menarche.

The time of menstruation may be different for each girl, generally between the ages of 12 and 18. A small number of girls will have their first period after the age of 18. If they still haven't had their first period by the age of 20, the mother should take the child to see a doctor. Girls who have their first menstruation are prone to shyness. At this time, mothers need to teach them patiently and tell them that this is a normal phenomenon of physical growth and development.
