The pulse is the pulsation of the arteries that can be felt on the surface of the human body. Blood is squeezed to various parts of the body through the contraction of the heart. As the heart squeezes, the flow of blood through the blood vessels will change, and the pressure on the blood vessels will also change accordingly with the contraction and expansion of the heart, which will lead to periodic expansion and contraction of the blood vessels, thereby generating a pulse. A healthy person has a consistent pulse and heartbeat.

There is a normal range for pulse values. When a person is in a calm state, it is generally 60 to 100 beats per minute. Exceeding or falling short of this will cause certain problems. Of course, the pulse rate will vary depending on age and gender. For the same person, the pulse rate will become slower and slower as age increases. Among people of the same age, women generally have a higher pulse rate than men.

The number and strength of the pulse are important indicators for judging whether a person is healthy or not. In traditional Chinese medicine, the "look, smell, ask, and feel" refers to feeling the pulse. By observing the beating of the pulse, one can accurately determine the disease the patient has. A healthy person's pulse should not be sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes strong, sometimes weak. If the pulse is too fast, it is called tachycardia, and too slow is called bradycardia.

The pulse rate of the same person may be different under different circumstances. For example, after finishing strenuous physical exercise or being extremely nervous, a person whose pulse rate is usually 80 beats per minute may have a heart rate of more than 120 beats per minute at these times. This is normal and there is no need to worry. When people just wake up, their pulse rate will be about 20 beats per minute less than usual.

If you know your pulse rate when you are usually calm, you can accurately calculate your body temperature, which is very helpful when you feel you have a fever. Basically, for every ten increases in the pulse rate, your body temperature will increase by one degree Celsius. For the same person, the pulse rate is within the normal range, and it is better to keep it as low as possible. After long-term exercise, you will find that your pulse rate will decrease.
