Six things to note when buying food and putting it in the refrigerator

Office workers are accustomed to doing a lot of shopping on weekends and putting all the food they buy into the refrigerator. In fact, the refrigerator is not a food safe. It cannot guarantee that all foods are kept fresh. Some foods are "afraid of the refrigerator" and should not be placed in the refrigerator. The author warns everyone that the following five types of food cannot be stored in the refrigerator at will!

1. Tropical fruits are afraid of low temperatures and will be "frozen" if placed in the refrigerator

Among fruits, tropical and subtropical fruits have poor adaptability to low temperatures. If they are refrigerated in the refrigerator, they will be "frostbitten", causing their skin to become concave and dark brown spots to appear. Not only will they lose nutrients but they will also easily deteriorate. Although most fresh fruits and vegetables can be stored for 1-2 days at 0-4 degrees Celsius. But not all fruits are suitable.

For example, bananas should be stored at a temperature above 12 degrees Celsius; citrus fruits should be stored at 2-7 degrees Celsius; fruits such as grapes and persimmons will not only lose their fragrance but also deteriorate their skin under low temperature conditions; fruits such as strawberries, bayberries, and mulberries are best eaten immediately after purchase, as putting them in the refrigerator will affect the taste and easily become moldy.

2. Leafy vegetables, tomatoes and other vegetables will lose water and rot if placed in the refrigerator

Leafy vegetables evaporate a lot of water, so it is best to buy and eat them immediately, and not store them in the refrigerator. Potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter melon, and onions with thick skins can be stored at room temperature. If tomatoes are refrigerated at low temperatures, they will become partially or completely waterlogged and soft, with brown round spots appearing on the surface and their flavor diminished. Cucumbers and green peppers that are kept in the refrigerator for a long time will turn black, become soft, change taste, grow hair or become sticky. They should not be stored in the refrigerator for a long time.

3. Flour products such as steamed buns and flower rolls will become dry and hard if placed in the refrigerator

Starchy foods such as steamed buns, flower rolls, and bread will dry out and harden faster if placed in the refrigerator. If they need to be stored, they must be wrapped in plastic bags before being placed in the freezer. Biscuits, candies, honey, pickles, paste, preserved fruits, dried foods, etc., these foods do not need to be put in the refrigerator.

4. Chocolate is easy to deteriorate in the refrigerator

When chocolate is stored in the refrigerator, its surface tends to dry out and form white frost, which can cause it to mold and deteriorate, losing its original flavor. When the room temperature is too high in the summer, if you want to put food in the refrigerator, you must first seal it with a fresh-keeping bag and then store it in the refrigerator's refrigerator compartment. This is because the fresh-keeping bag can moisturize and prevent freezing.

5. Fish and meat are easily oxidized when placed in the refrigerator

Although fish and meat need to be refrigerated or frozen, the time should not be too long. If you find that the meat has turned yellow due to freezing, it means that the fat has been oxidized. The oxidized fish and meat have lost their nutrients and can only be discarded.

6. Be sure to carefully check the storage requirements on the packaging of the food you buy

Only by using the refrigerator properly can you eat fresh and healthy food.
