The difference between removable dentures and fixed dentures

With the continuous improvement of living standards, many people always have different dental problems due to their casual eating habits. Sometimes in serious cases, the teeth have to be extracted. In this case, dentures are needed to repair them so as not to affect our chewing ability and appearance. However, dentures are generally divided into two types: fixed and removable. We must choose according to our own oral conditions. Let’s learn about the difference between removable dentures and fixed dentures.

The difference between removable dentures and fixed dentures

Fixed dentures: Medically called fixed dentures or fixed bridges. It uses the good teeth on both sides of the gap between missing teeth to fix the dentures on it. Just like building a bridge requires a solid foundation, patients cannot put it on or off by themselves. The manufacturing method of this type of denture is to first grind off a part of the abutment teeth (teeth that serve as the basis) at both ends, then make a metal crown sleeve to fit over the abutment teeth, and then use another metal rod to connect the two ends, with a plastic tooth in the middle. Its advantages are small size, comfort, no foreign body sensation, and easy to get used to after being put into the mouth; the chewing function is greater than that of removable dentures. The disadvantage is that the conditions of the abutment teeth at both ends must be good. During the preparation, many abutment teeth need to be ground off, which is time-consuming and requires high conditions for the doctor to prepare. The teeth made by some itinerant doctors certainly cannot meet scientific standards. Some people do not like fixed dentures because of the pain caused by teeth grinding. In addition, fixed teeth with metal crowns are not beautiful. Too many missing teeth should not be too many, and 1 to 2 missing teeth are appropriate. Porcelain teeth are currently widely used in China. The color is very ideal, but the cost is relatively high.

Removable denture: It is a kind of restoration that uses plastic as the base, relies on mucosa and bone tissue for support, and is retained by the denture retainer and base. It can be removed and worn freely, so it is called a removable denture. It consists of dentures on a base and an elastic metal clasp. The chewing pressure it bears is not entirely borne by the adjacent teeth on both sides, but is also partially borne by the gums and alveolar bone at the site of the missing teeth. Therefore, removable dentures can be installed even if the adjacent teeth at both ends are not very strong. Its advantages are that it is relatively easy to operate, causes less tooth grinding, looks better than metal crowns, is easily accepted by patients, and the dentures can be removed and washed, which is beneficial to oral hygiene. “Vitable teeth” have a wide range of applications and can repair more missing teeth, from one missing tooth to several or even a full mouth of teeth. The disadvantage is that it takes a while to get used to it after installation. If conditions permit, you can choose cast-steel support. This technology, like porcelain, is a new business that has only been developed in recent years. Its characteristics are relative comfort, easy to put on and take off, and short discomfort period. The disadvantage is that it is more expensive. Another new method is invisible dentures, which do not use metal clasps but use a special elastic plastic that is similar in color to the gums as a retainer. It has also been introduced in some parts of my country in recent years.

The above is an introduction to the areas of removable dentures and fixed dentures. After understanding, we know that fixed dentures and removable dentures have their own advantages and disadvantages. When installing dentures, we must choose according to the location of the dentures and the condition of the oral cavity, and we must go to a regular specialist dental hospital for treatment.
