What is the method of giving oxygen by mask

Perhaps people don't have much knowledge and understanding about oxygen delivery through masks in their daily lives, because most of the time, these are masks that firefighters or people in special professions need to use. However, we still need to pay attention to some common sense issues about it, because when you know and understand these common sense, then in life, you will know how to use them to better protect yourself.

1. Nasal cannula oxygen administration

① Deep insertion method: insert from the nostril to the nasopharynx, which is equivalent to the distance from the nose wing to the earlobe. When oxygen is given through a nasal cannula, the oxygen concentration and flow rate are roughly in the following relationship: inhaled oxygen concentration (%) = 21% + 4 × oxygen flow rate (L/min).

This method is simple and safe to use. It can correct hypoxia without causing a significant increase in PaCO2. It is the most commonly used and effective method of oxygen inhalation. Disadvantages: The tube end is easily blocked, the catheter is highly irritating to the nasopharynx, and insertion can cause nasal soreness, swelling, pain, increased nasal secretions and mucosal damage, so it is not easily accepted by patients.

② Shallow insertion method: The catheter end is located in the anterior nasal cavity, and the insertion length is about 4-5cm.

The shallow insertion method causes less stimulation to the patient and is easier for the patient to accept. Disadvantages: The tube end is easily blocked and easily falls out during sleep at night. The oxygen content of the inhaled gas is lower than that of the deep insertion method.

2. Oxygen administration for nasal congestion

Insert the nasal plug into the nostrils. The size of the nasal plug should be just enough to block the nostrils.

This method is suitable for patients who need oxygen for a long time. It can avoid the irritation of the respiratory mucosa by the catheter and is easy for patients to accept. Blood gas analysis showed that the oxygen content of oxygen inhaled through nasal congestion was higher than that through nasal cannula.

Pay attention to the recognition and understanding of these common sense. In some emergency situations, they can help yourself better ensure life safety and health. Therefore, no matter who you are in life, you should learn more about these issues, and don’t be at a loss about the use of masks when special circumstances arise.
