Many adults suffer from gingival atrophy, but it is a relatively stubborn dental disease, which is divided into physiological atrophy and pathological atrophy. In fact, most of the causes are related to their own living habits. For example: If you brush your teeth incorrectly, dental diseases will not be cured for a long time. Generally speaking, gingival recession can be divided into two types: physiological and pathological. There is only one physiological reason, which is atrophy caused by aging, which usually occurs in menopausal women and people over 50 years old. As for the pathological causes, they can be roughly divided into the following reasons: 1. Brushing too hard and using the horizontal brushing method, the gum edge receives excessive mechanical stimulation, which is often the main cause of gum atrophy. 2. Suffering from periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, uneven teeth, food impaction, etc., which cause the gums on one side of individual teeth to shrink and the gums to shrink due to the destruction of the alveolar bone. 3. Improper filling of cavities or making of inappropriate dentures can cause the gums to shrink due to inflammation. 4. Improper use of dental floss or interdental brushes can cause traumatic gum atrophy. 5. Irritation and pressure of hard dental plaque on the gum edge is also a common cause. Generally speaking, once gum recession has occurred, it will never return to its previous state. This is determined by the special structure of the gum tissue. Gum recession can cause defects in the tooth neck, or even mild dentin hypersensitivity, causing tooth pain. In severe cases, it can cause pulpitis (pain) or even fracture of the tooth crown. After examination by a dentist, the cause will be found out, and treatment or guidance from the doctor, such as treating periodontitis, cleaning tartar, and treating occlusal trauma, can slow down the rate of gum recession. Severe atrophy can be treated surgically. |
