What are the symptoms of acute encephalitis?

If we want to treat and solve acute encephalitis, we should pay attention to it in our daily life. Usually, acute encephalitis will show some symptoms, such as fever, general discomfort, sore throat, or impaired consciousness, convulsions, aphasia and other symptoms.

1. Symptoms of infection: such as fever, general malaise, myalgia, sore throat, which may last from a few days to several weeks. In some cases, fever may occur suddenly, and the white blood cell count is normal or increases to (15-30)×109/L.

2. Meningeal irritation signs and cerebrospinal fluid changes: Cerebrospinal fluid pressure is normal or increased, white blood cell count increases to (10-500)×106/L, and a few can reach (1000-1500)×106/L, mainly lymphocytes. Neutrophils are the main component in the early stages of encephalitis caused by arboviruses. Sugar levels are normal or slightly high, and in a few cases may be lower. The protein level may increase slightly to 0.5-1g/L, and red blood cells may be present in the cerebrospinal fluid of herpes simplex virus encephalitis. In a few cases of acute viral encephalitis, cerebrospinal fluid may be completely normal.

3. Symptoms of localized or diffuse encephalitis include mental symptoms, delirium, coma and other disturbances of consciousness, convulsions, aphasia, tight grip, sucking reflex, and hemiplegia. Asymmetric tendon reflexes, positive pathological reflexes, etc. Brain damage includes cranial nerve paralysis and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Cerebellar damage includes nystagmus, ataxia, and inability to diakinesia.

4. There may also be signs of primary lesions outside the central nervous system, such as measles, chickenpox, mumps or infectious mononucleosis. Some cases are characterized by mental symptoms or symptoms of high intracranial pressure. If the lesions are mainly in the brainstem, it is called brainstem encephalitis. Different types of viral encephalitis may also have their own specific manifestations.
