White peony is an ingredient in many skin care products. Acute toxicity of white peony: After intraperitoneal injection of 6g/kg of methanol extract of peony, spontaneous movement of rats and mice was inhibited, piloerection, diarrhea, and respiratory depression occurred, and half of the rats died, and all the mice died within 2 days.

No abnormality was observed after intragastric administration. The LD50 of paeoniflorin in mice after intravenous injection is 3.53g/kg, and that in mice after intraperitoneal injection is 9.53g/kg. It is not lethal if administered by oral gavage. The LD50 of total glucosides of white paeony for mice and rats by intraperitoneal injection are 125 mg/kg and 301 mg/kg, respectively.

It was also reported that the LD50 of intravenous and intraperitoneal injections in mice were 159 mg/kg and 230 mG/kg, respectively, and oral administration was >2500 mg/kg, with no obvious symptoms of poisoning and no death. Subacute toxicity: Rats were gavaged with peony methanol extract at 1.5g/kg and 3.0g/kg per day for 21 consecutive days. Increased urine protein was observed in the low-dose group.

The high-dose group had a significant weight loss, and the red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit in the blood all decreased significantly. The mean corpuscular volume and red blood cell distribution range increased significantly, suggesting possible macrocytic anemia. The spleens in both dose groups were enlarged, and their weight gain was related to the dose. Splenic sinus dilation and congestion were observed. Lung weights also increased significantly.

Dietary precautions

Suitable for: People with blood deficiency and yin deficiency who suffer from chest, abdominal and flank pain, pain in the liver area, pain in cholecystitis and gallstones; people with abdominal pain in diarrhea, and abdominal pain in women during menstruation; people with spontaneous sweating, easy sweating and night sweats; people with gastrocnemius spasms, cramps and pain in the limbs, and restless legs syndrome; it can be used with licorice to relieve various chest, abdomen and limb pains.

Taboos: White peony root is cold in nature, so people with abdominal pain and diarrhea due to deficiency and cold should not eat it; children should not eat it during measles; people who are taking the Chinese medicine Veratrum should not eat it.
