There are many types of cardiogenic edema

Cardiogenic edema is edema of the body caused by heart dysfunction. Edema occurs when heart disease is caused by various reasons or when heart failure occurs.

Features

The characteristics of cardiogenic edema are: 1. Edema forms gradually, first manifested as decreased urine volume, heavy limbs, weight gain, and then gradually edema of the lower limbs and the whole body appears. 2. Edema starts in the sagging parts of the body and gradually develops into systemic edema. Generally, pitting edema of the lower extremities appears first, most obviously in the ankles. 3. Accompanied by other symptoms and signs of right heart failure and increased venous pressure, such as palpitations, shortness of breath, distended neck veins, hepatomegaly, and even chest and ascites. Related examinations include: electrocardiogram, X-ray examination, echocardiogram, radionuclide and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, exercise tolerance and peak oxygen consumption measurement, etc.

Classification

Cardiogenic edema can be divided into systemic edema and localized edema.

Systemic edema can be divided into the following categories according to its cause

(1) Cardiogenic edema: common in congestive heart failure, acute or chronic pericarditis, etc.

(2) Nephrogenic edema: common in glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis and nephrotic syndrome.

(3) Hepatic edema: common in viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, etc.

(4) Malnutrition edema: common in hypoproteinemia, vitamin B1 deficiency, etc.

(5) Edema caused by connective tissue diseases: common in lupus erythematosus, scleroderma and dermatomyositis.

(6) Allergic edema: such as serum sickness.

(7) Endocrine edema: common in Sheehan's disease, hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome.

(8) Idiopathic edema: such as functional edema, etc.

(9) Others: anemic edema, toxic edema of pregnancy.

Localized edema can be divided into the following categories according to its cause

(1) Venous obstructive edema: common in thrombophlebitis, varicose veins of the lower limbs, etc.

(2) Lymphatic obstructive edema: commonly seen in elephantiasis caused by filariasis and chest edema caused by mumps.

(3) Inflammatory edema: common in local edema caused by erysipelas, furunculosis, cellulitis, etc.

(4) Allergic edema: common in angioedema, contact dermatitis, etc.
